Introducing Your New Favorite Way to Meal Plan With Chicken

Would You Try the KFC Double Down?

Last August, in a This Is Why You're Fat kind of moment, KFC began testing the Double Down in select markets, a sandwich that contains two pieces of bacon, melted slices of Swiss and pepper jack cheese, and "the Colonel's sauce" stuffed between two slices of fried chicken. It seems almost too crazy to be true, but KFC has announced it will be rolling out the behemoth nationwide on April 12. I'm not going to lie — I'm kind of curious to try it, but at 540 calories, 32 grams of fat, and 1,380 milligrams of sodium, it definitely won't be a regular part of my life. How do you feel about the sandwich going mainstream?

i wonder which parts of the chickens and how the parts of the chicken got to where they are, and how compassionately the chickens were treated and how they were fed before they went DOUBLE DOWN! !

and america wonders why its fat... but having options like that its just going to get worse. seriously these kind of gross foods needs to stop, they clearly aren't healthy and anyone who eats one of these has a serious lack of consideration towards your body.

I wasn't getting defensive :) I was the one who mentioned that KFC wasn't helping the obesity epidemic and that's what you came back with saying they weren't responsible for the obesity epidemic. I thought maybe I had to clear up what I meant. My mistake

Wow, way to be defensive, girlA. I didn't say that you did say that. And, KFC does have grilled chicken now that, while not incredibly healthy, is still a healthier choice.

You forgot the gravy. :p

I didnt think it would get worse than that awful potatoe + cheese + corn + chicken bowl but that is also horrible. i feel sick just thinking about it.

Just too much grease and cholesterol in one food product. Bleh. Even when I ate meat, I wouldn't have tried that. I used to get the KFC chicken strip meal with cole slaw and a biscuit, that was a little more variety. Not that it was any healthier, but I know my stomach would have killed me after eating the Double Down. At least if it was a sandwich, you would have the bun to act as a sponge for some of the grease. :p The mashed potato bowl isn't any better, there were lots of news reports just like this one when it came out.

I would try it, though I rarely crave fried chicken when I crave junk food. KFC's mashed potato bowl is reportedly almost as bad or worse -- 700 calories and 32 g of fat -- assuming that the calorie count for this double down is right. I'm not sure why people are disgusted by the Double Down, unless they're vegetarian. Chicken cordon bleu is breaded chicken around ham and cheese.

I certainly don't believe that fast food companies are responsible for the obesity epidemic, lilkimbo. I merely said that it certainly doesn't help it--how could a "sandwich" like that be helpful? I just think that it's commendable when fast food companies at least make an effort at being progressive and make changes and of course, it's a personal choice to eat crap like this.

They look like deep fried and breaded chicken breasts, no skin. I think they're just targeting people who don't care what they eat and the teenage boys who like to dare each other to eat the nastiest food on the menu (not just 1, but 5 of them). Very few people do the low carb thing these days, thank goodness.

Ew. For one thing, I would not like any sandwich without bread. Secondly, what does "slice of fried chicken" mean? Are they just chicken patties? Is there skin? (ew! skin!) It's probably low carb, though. Maybe that's their angle?
danakscully64 danakscully64 6 years
I don't think most people eating this are trying to lose weight anyway :p The KFC site has a single original recipe chicken breast at 320 calories... two alone is 640 calories. Unless they're cutting the breast in half, there's no way it's 560. I'm wondering if these are actually a lot smaller than sandwich size, maybe snack size? If 32g of fat is accurate, I bet 20g or more is saturated and trans fat.

Personally, I'd pass on that because it looks really gross. But I have to wonder about the calorie counts they have listed. If it really has more like 1200 calories than the 560 they're advertising, a lot of people are probably going to buy this and wonder why they're gaining weight even though they're accounting for the 560 calories.

It's weird, because I like all the items involved....but no. Just no.

i find the idea of a sandwich with chicken as bread so weird, but i actually think the look of the chicken is appealing...i would like to dip it in honey and call them chicken nuggets i wouldn't eat it either, but let's call a spade a spade, there's lots of stuff out there TERRIBLE for us...if you don't eat it everyday or often, you're probably going to be okay...this is a gross idea but i mean, it's KFC...they don't pretend not to be all about the fried chicken
