10 Things to Know Before Buying Art

It's never been easier to buy art, but it can still be an overwhelming process. To help demystify the experience, we asked Alex Farkas, founder of UGallery, to weigh in on the 10 things to keep in mind when starting your own collection!

  1. Visit museums and galleries to get an idea of what you like.
  2. When something catches your eye, make a note about the subject matter, color palette, or style.
  3. Set a budget. There is a misconception that you have to be rich to afford art, but that's not true! You can find unique and well-made art for as little as a few hundred dollars.
  4. Don't worry about the future value of the work. Sure, some art will increase in value, but purchasing for investment takes years of knowledge and expertise.
  5. When thinking about art, use the same principles that you apply to the rest of your home decor. What's practical? What's worth the cost? Just like that couch you bought in college, art does not need to be a lifelong possession.
  6. When you find pieces you like, ask questions! Art becomes more interesting the more you know about the artist and the inspiration.
  7. Ask about a return policy. Many galleries — both online and physical — will give you the option of trying out a piece in your home. Art can look very different once it is on your own wall!
  8. Once you think you have found the perfect piece, wait a few days to see if it is something you can't live without. Never feel pressured to buy before you are ready!
  9. Ask for a discount. Seriously.
  10. Above all, buy what you love. If you follow your gut and your budget, you'll smile every time you walk past your new piece of art!
