Unlike wall-to-wall carpet, an area rug is designed to cover only a select piece of flooring. Machine or hand-woven from textiles like cotton, wool, silk, and synthetic fibers, area rugs are simply laid over existing flooring, so they are easy to move and remove. Area rugs often come in standard sizes, including 5 x 8 and 8 x 10, and can be used as both accents and centerpieces, depending on their size.
