Before and After: Boring China Cabinet to Fabulous Bookcase

Su Casa member LittleLeo recently transformed a dated china cabinet into a fabulous bookcase:
We inherited this piece from a friend who was getting a new dining room set. My husband couldn't understand why I wanted the cabinet and not the dining table too. I explained I had a vision for my home office. I sanded it all down and painted it matte black, wallpapered the back, and had acrylic shelves made. It has set the tone for the room and now the "office" doesn't take away from the living room. It actually adds an extra layer of function to the room, at least I think so.
To see LittleLeo's finished project, .

That looks darling and my parents are giving us a very similar china cabinet as a housewarming gift, your 'after' definitely inspires me!

I did a simliar thing with a cabinet I found: I repainted it, then taped fabric to the back to cover several holes. I use it for my china because I have a very small kitchen! http://natschwartz.blogspot.com/2009/02/latest-diy-project.html

In general I loathe this painted furniture trend- so many girls are destroying irreplaceable Victorian/Edwardian pieces to get the look of an Anthropologie catalogue. This though... unless I'm sorely mistaken, not old, and utterly yuck to begin with. Way cool result. Well done!!

Well if that's not the best redo of that 80's golden oak look, I don't know what is. I'm so inspired!

Very interesting! My parents have a china cabinet just like that. I'm going to remember this in case it ever ends up in my hands.
