Before and After: A Light and Airy Living Room

Su Casa member ndchristine has been making some updates to the old farmhouse she and her husband bought, which "had seen better days."
The previous owner's paint job was dark and dreary, and the split paint colors made the room seem smaller than it is. She lightened it up with a fresh-white paint job, and chose light furnishings to keep it airy. And, she tore up that grungy carpet to reveal beautiful wood floors. To see the room in its new and much-improved state,

.

This room looks like a breath of fresh air to me! I love how she used an old ladder to hang throws and accessorize with that beautiful blue demijohn. What do you think?

I'm a fan of this re-do! I think the only reason the room may look "cut" is that the second photo is taken from closer in than the first... and as for the first room looking cozier, I think I may have to (respectfully) disagree, based on furniture layout. The new set-up looks much cozier and much more conducive to conversation! Imagine sitting on the couch in the first photo and staring off into... nothing? No thanks. Congrats ndchristine on a job well done! (Even if it is a work in progress)

It's definitely a huge improvement! I love the cot, the curtains/rods, and the floors. I'm also a fan of the ladder and the rug on the left. The larger rug on the right isn't my style, but all-in-all, the room looks vastly better. I'm excited to see updates!

Ooo I love this look! I am so in love with textiles (blankets, sheets, pillows, bedding of ANY kind!!) so I really love all the blankets, pillows, etc all over. I think the fact that there's a lack of other clutter and it's not over decorated adds to how warm and cozy it looks. I'd love my house to look this way!! :)

By the way, I love the cot! I've actually been searching for one at flea markets ever since I saw a military cot repurposed as a coffee table in Blueprint Magazine (RIP): http://www.marthastewart.com/article/tag-sale-upgrades?lnc=1a89cf380e1dd010VgnVCM1000005b09a00aRCRD&page=2&rsc=articlecontent_home

I'm sorry! It does look WAY better than it did before and I LOVE THE COLOR and the curtains. I'm a big fan of cool colors and clean looks I just thought it needed a little personal touches aspect like some art work or pictures. It's very pretty :)

i love the restored wooden floors. the room looks more open, clean and fresh. though the old look was cosy- i can see how it would be old and dusty! ndchristine- as a work in progress i can't wait to see how it turns out. post more pictures when it does!!

Hello! I probably should have stated originally this is a work in progress. The older version was soo not warm - dirty, sloppy paint job, and cheap trim. Thus far, our budget has only allowed for the repair and refinishing of the floors, the larger base molding to match the original woodwork, and paint. As for the cot - it's an old military wooden military cot which my husband loves (he's former military). Compromise in marriage extends to decorating! Hopefully next year we can get new windows, but as for now, it's so nice to be able to walk barefoot in the house without feeling like I need to disinfect my feet.

The only thing I like is the hardwood floor. That's a nice upgrade from the carpet. The rest is underwhelming. Sorry.

I agree, it looks cheap. And the room size has been cut. Atleast the older version was warm...

Ick NO! It looks like an abandoned beach house. What's with the cot? I think it looks cheap and messy. It reminds me of a pair of crumpled boxers on the floor. Needs work fo'show!
