In case you haven't heard, the bungalow apartment complex that was the setting for The Big Lebowski is currently for sale. Many of my friends — myself included — count The Big Lebowski as one of our favorite movies, with The Dude (played by Jeff Bridges) as one of our favorite movie characters ever. The Dude spends much of the film attempting to replace a rug in his home that was destroyed by hired hooligans, regularly repeating the line, "That rug really tied the room together." I can empathize with The Dude — a rug truly can make or break a room.
While it's obvious from The Dude's sense of décor that no woman in her right mind has spent significant amounts of time in his apartment, it's not without hope. Using his current digs as a starting point, I decided to update The Dude's living room look. See how I'd change the look of The Dude's living room.
As much as I can understand The Dude's appreciation for tiki-inspired bamboo furniture, I cannot abide by his choice — I'm not a big fan of bamboo unless it's used as flooring. To create a more timeless look, I'd ask him to consider trading out his bamboo bar for this 19th Century Biedermeier Buffet ($4,200). It has plenty of space for stashing the vodka and coffee liqueur needed for making white Russians, and is a terrifically handsome piece to boot. While I'm sure The Dude would balk at the price tag, he could probably find something very similar for a much more reasonable price at the Rose Bowl.
