Carrie Bradshaw Traded Fashion For Furniture, Did You?

Have You Traded Fashion For Furniture?

In a scene from Sex and the City 2, Carrie returns to a favorite clothing store after a long absence, and the sales clerk wonders where she's been. Carrie admits she temporarily traded fashion for furniture while decorating her new apartment — and what a fabulous apartment it is! (Get all the details straight from the source in my interview with set decorator Lydia Marks.)

Were you into fashion before furniture? Did you make a life change and start spending more on home style than personal style? Or were you never much of a clotheshorse to begin with?

I actually was never interested in furniture or decorating until I moved to a city and my place is in a well known street. I have never gone to so many furniture stores as I have the last few weeks. I have given up my love for fashion to try to have a love for decorating. I love antiques but I want that city style as well. So this has definitely been a challenge for me. ;-)

Oh, yes. When I'm on a home-decorating kick, I have to halt spending on other things. I'm a very practical clothes shopper, though. I'll buy a few key pieces that I can mix and match and don't really need to shop around for clothes all the time.I actually spend more on make-up than clothing! I definitely spend more on decoration than clothing, too.

Yes and no. I still look good and love new clothes and fashion, but some of my former clothing budget is now dedicated to home decor (not so much furniture, as I already have a ton of that).

Just think about it. You might look good when you leave the house, but home is where the heart is and a million other sayings just like it. Who wants to come home to a house that looks like crap? You might look like a million dollars in public but underneath you live like a hillbilly. Looking good makes you feel good but being comfortable and relaxing in beautiful surroundings make you feel way better. Its the type of relief that last a lifetime. While wearing that Marc Jacobs purse only last a season.

Yes, the moment we bought our house, I turned onto the furniture and house decor band wagon and have spent about a 10th of my regular pre-house shopping budget on clothes! Homeownership opens a whole world of shopping possibilities. Love it. "" ditto

Oh yeah, as soon as I renovated my kitchen...it opened up a whole can of worms for house projects. I didn't step foot in any stores that weren't bright orange or blue on the outside for 6 months! I'm learning to combine the two passions...I have an Outfit Inspiration on my blog....outfits inspired by a beautiful room.

I love home design and decorating, but fashion wins every time!

Oh yeah, don't forget about landscape design. That's a whole other consumption level. I love it.

No. I've simply added home style to my consumption. :) There's no need to sacrifice personal style to home style. They're a compatible pairing. Also, I notice that they follow the same trends.

I just moved into a huge, fabulous new apartment (that's about 10 times the size of my old place!). I'm definitely focusing on decorating my place more than buying new shoes...just have to ignore all those Sale! e-mails in my inbox....
