Casa Quickie: Ditch the Book Jackets

Do you spend too much time ensuring that all of your coffee-table books maintain perfect jackets? In a recent LA Times article, Trey Russell, owner of Laguna Beach gift boutique Aris tells you to ditch that thinking — and those jackets. Russell maintains that "Book jackets just get torn, anyway, you might as well get rid of them . . . It creates a more monochromatic, less chaotic look." Try it in your own casa, perhaps in a display similar to this one, from Russell's home.

I do this, too! Once you take the glossy, bold jacket off a (hardcover) book, the true cover is usually beautiful and rich-looking, like some early edition treasure you'd find in the back of an old used bookstore.

book jackets are a big pet peeve of mine! They just bother me and I hate them. I usually take them off the first chance I get.

This looks great, but I think it would drive me nuts. I don't like the jackets when I'm trying to read a book. They don't bother me when they're on a shelf, though.

I hate book jackets, they make everything look messy. (love the example picture!!)

I don't understand the point of book jackets. Just like I don't really get the whole 'sleeve' for DVD's that some of them have.
