Casa Quickie: Paint Your Home Library

If you don't read and you don't want other people to know it, you can fool your guests by painting a faux bookcase on your wall. New York interior designer Amie Weitzman had a trompe-l'œil bookcase put in this sitting room of the New York residence of one of her clients. As you can see, the homeowner appears to have a mighty colorful and extensive book collection that makes a powerful focal point. But if you look closely you'll realize it's not what it seems. Literacy is overrated anyway, isn't it?

See now The City Girl, I'd rather see that rug in the room than the faux books. That rug is gorgeous!

I don't like the concept, but I LOVE the colors. It reminds me of the Paul Smith swirl rug with which I am completely, completely obsessed:http://www.casasugar.com/578523:-)

I find the colors inspiring though - that would be a perfect look for the guest room my mom is redesigning that has lots of colors in it. I will send it to her and recommend she follow this look, but with real books. She has boxes in her garage that don't fit her bookshelves.

I'd be embarrassed to have a fake library painted on my wall. It's deceptive, in a bad way. Also, I'd feel super awkward if I was in someone else's home, saw this, walked over to peruse their books, and then realized they were fake. I don't think I'd be able to suppress my confusion/disappointment...

LOL I picked up on the snarky tone in your last line, Casa.As far as the look goes... unusual, yes. Interesting? eh, not so much (to me). Not only do I not like the fake books, it just to me looks too flat and juvenile for the space. When I saw it, my first thought was of a children's library. That being said, I do like the room otherwise. The furnishings, rug, architectural detail all go quite nicely together.

Zivanod and Kimpossible, I agree with you (hope my snarky tone in the last line came through)! It is an unusual, and interesting look though, wouldn't you agree?

I'm not a fan of this look. I'd rather see REAL books on a shelf or maybe some nice large piece of artwork (not fake books) covering the area.
