Casa Quickie: Trash Can Cleaning

Umbra at ShopStyle

Of all of the messes to tackle in your home during Spring cleaning, the trash can is probably the stinkiest. OK, your compost is up there, too. Piles of leftovers rotting away for a few days in a warm plastic bag is not exactly my favorite scent. So, when it comes time to clean, you can't just spray it with some all-purpose cleaner and wipe the grime and stench away: You've got to exercise a little patience. The best way to clean your trash can is to soak it for 30 minutes before scrubbing off the gunk with a sponge. I prefer to use a solution of super-hot water and vinegar or Clorox Green Works Natural Dilutable Cleaner. If it's really messy, you might want to spray it down with a hose before you soak.

My trash can isn't gross (like some people have said above) especially because I leave a plastic bag above the trash can in my kitchen for food items. The plastic bag gets thrown out everyday and the trash can is for dry food/non-perishables.

Ugh, my kids always somehow MISS the bag, ( thinking this may be on purpose sometimes) and the gooey whatevers get between the bag and the trashcan down the inside wall. Such fun.

Compost is the worst! But yeah, the trash can is pretty bad too.

I don’t find my trash can to be a big cleaning chore, actually … but I like baking soda and vinegar for mine – let the fizzies loosen any grime, then rinse with hot water. After it’s dry, I put some more baking soda in there to deodorize (and soak up any drips that may come later).

Might isn't gross by any means but I should give it a good cleaning.
