DIY IKEA Dip Dye Curtains

See How We Added Bohemian Flair to These Ikea Curtains

As part of our Styled by You $500 Giveaway with Ikea, Elka and I have been applying simple techniques to reenvision some of our favorite IKEA products. Today, I'm sharing my second hack project, which was made with IKEA's AINA Curtains in natural ($50 for a pair).

I was inspired by Michael Penney's fabulous dip-dye curtains, but thought that adding an ombré twist would be a great way to tie in the indigo and teal hues from my room. All it took was a couple of buckets, some fabric dye, and a sunny Saturday afternoon to achieve my own boho-inspired curtains. Keep reading to see the big reveal and get the steps to pull it off yourself!

I started by picking up a box of Rit powder dye in teal and navy and a couple of five-gallon buckets from the hardware store. I hung the curtains first to determine where I wanted my color to start. With a piece of chalk, I drew a line to mark how high I wanted the dye to reach and then measured and replicated that on the other curtain panel. To mix the dye, follow the directions on the Rit box. I used all of the dye powder to get a really saturated effect. Next, dampen the portion of the curtains that will be dyed with a spray bottle and water. This will ensure that the color soaks in evenly. Dunk the curtains in the teal dye first and keep dunking until you get the desired color. I left mine in for almost 5 minutes. Dry them in the sun and then dip the lower half of the curtains into the navy dye.

If it's a sunny day and your lawn is dry, lay curtains on the grass and anchor with a couple of magazines.

I absolutely love the way that they turned out! The curtains add a sort of beachy vibe to the room and look amazing when the sun shines through.
