DIY Wall Stencil

How to Fake the Look of Wallpaper

Classic Casual Home blogger Mary Ann Pickett had her heart set on Schumacher's swoon-worthy Asara Flower wallpaper for her guest bedroom but nixed the possibility when when she realized it would cost her over $550 — yikes!

Thinking she could hand-block it herself with a stencil, she scoured the Internet until she discovered a near-perfect match: Royal Design Studio's Indian Paisley Wall Stencil. For just $23, it seemed worth a shot.

With proper prep work and a little patience, Mary Ann's wall stencil completely transformed the look of the room. Keep reading to see the smart steps she took to pull off the look!

Though she could have used acrylic paint in any color, Mary Ann decided to stay true to the crisp blue-and-white palette of the Schumacher wallpaper, which tied in nicely with her ticking-striped headboard.

Mary Ann tested out the stencil on paper before applying it to the wall and used the test pattern to make copies to figure out wall placement.

To mimic the look of block printing, she experimented, varying how much paint she applied with her stencil brush.

The entire wall ended up costing her less than $45 — a significantly smaller price than the $550 she would have paid for wallpaper.
