You've Been Making Your Bed All Wrong! Here's What You Should Be Doing

Do You Leave the Lights on When You Leave?

When I know that I'll be returning home from work after dark, I always make sure to leave at least the entryway and porch light on. I hate to fumble with keys in the dark! I'm sure that if I didn't have a big dog inside the house, I'd leave even more lights on. How about you?

I always have my keys ready, whether I'm walking out of a store late or not or if I'm going into my house. Where I live, it gets pretty dark at night. Does anyone leave a light on (like in the kitchen, where you can see it from the road) on the inside even when everyone is sleeping? My dad does that which bothers me.

I leave the light on inside because I have 2 dogs and a cat. My dad turns out all the lights when he leaves regardless and whenever I get home and find them in the dark they are all huddled in the living room together all sad after being in the dark for over 5 hours!

My apartment building has a sun sensitive light on every entry, so there's no need to.

I hope your big dog is a better guard dog than mine... I have a 150 lb Saint Bernard and figured I'd never have to worry about a break in because even though he's a sweetheart, he certainly looks intimidating! But last October someone broke in while we were out, stole ALL my jewelry, and the dog didn't do a darn thing! I don't think he even got up from his bed!

I may leave one on depending on how late I will be back.

My condo has lights throughout the townhouse complex so I never need worry about the porch light being on. And since so many people I know find the stacked townhose conecpt confusing, no one knows which windows are mine anyway so I don't worry about making my place look like someone is home.

We have the outside light on a timer. Maybe look into a motion detector?

I'm assuming the "unfortunate" part was referring to the waste of energy. If you install a motion detector you'll save electricity and stay safe.

Also wondering how this is unfortunate? I do get my key out, but I am also 99.9% of the time, walking to our front door with my sons (both 3). It is all about safety, and if you think that's unfortunate, then you have issues.

I never really get home after dark, unless it's on a weekend and I saw a movie at night or something. At our apt., the light turns on automatically in front of our door and in the "halls", and right outside of the building in the parking lots and stuff. Do I don't actually leave the lights on if I am coming home later. I never leave the lights on at all. With how much we pay for central air (here in the deep south, it runs all the time, otherwise it is sweltering), I like to save as much as I can ;)

How is that unfortunate? I do the same thing. It's all about saftey, you never know what kind of weirdos could be lurking around your house if it's dark and they think no one is there.

We leave the outside lights on all night. It decreases the chance of burglaries. I almost always turn a light on inside the house too if I know I will be home after dark. Def safety first at my house.

I rarely leave the front light on, but just because i always forget to leave it on if it's still light out when we leave. If my husband is out and i know what time he will be home i'll turn the light on a few minutes before he gets home or when i hear him pull into the driveway, he does the same for me.

I leave the porch light on if I know my roommates are coming home, but I don't bother if it's just for myself... our electricity meter is right beside the front door so I'm constantly reminded to switch things off :)

That's unfortunate. An alternative could be just getting the key you need in your hand a few blocks away or before you get out of the car.

I'm with you Casa! If I know we are going to be home after dark, the front patio/pourch light goes on and the light right by the front entry way goes on.
