Do You Open Presents on Christmas Eve?

Traditionally, we've always opened one present on Christmas Eve and then left the major unwrapping for the next morning. What's the routine at your home?

When my siblings and I were young, we had a hard time waiting until Christmas morning, so our parents allowed us to open gifts from extended family on Christmas Eve. We've continued that practice, even though my siblings and I are far past the age of being unable to wait.

When I was a very, very little girl, my grandparents had a big dinner at their house and afterwards all the presents from extended family were opened. The next morning my sister and I opened our presents from Santa at our house. When I was 8, we moved six hours away, so the new tradition was that we got to open one present on Christmas Eve. That's kind of stuck since then.

My mom is from a very small town in Austria and Christmas Eve was always the big night. Kris Kringle would arrive at the door with the tree and the presents. We would have snacks and drinks, and then they would move on to the next house. At midnight we would all go to mass which was done in Latin. Christmas morning was for hosting visiting friends and family and exchanging gifts with them. My favorite day though was January 12th when the Three Holy Kings would come to the house with a horse drawn cart to pick up the tree and then the bonfire in town square where they wold burn all the trees.
