Real Life Small Space Solutions: A Multitasking Multimedia Area

Manhattan Nest blogger Daniel Kanter is a master at making the most of big city living. One of his secrets: finding furniture that can serve multiple purposes. Here, he shows us how a multitasking multimedia cabinet transforms a small space.

  1. Seek a Versatile Piece: When you're on the hunt for furniture, look for pieces that have ample storage, aren't too big or bulky, and aren't too narrow in their function. Daniel's thrift store credenza is a great example. While this piece is a TV stand and book display, it's also used as a buffet and bar when entertaining guests.
  2. Make It Work: If you find a piece you love that solves several of your furniture problems at once, make it work and overcome any imperfections. Daniel disguised the minor scratches and gouges in the credenza and replaced the worn wooden legs with a chrome base from Ikea. See Daniel's step-by-step instructions for refurbishing vintage furniture.
  3. Blend Style With Function: Apartment living requires decor to play multiple roles. Rather than having a separate bookcase and media stand, the finished credenza blends the two. Displaying books, accents, and a TV together stylishly offers the best of both worlds in a way that works perfectly for the space.
