Have Raccoons Invaded Your Home or Yard?

I just spent two hours in the veterinarian's office getting my dog treated for raccoon bites. This raccoon was checking out the empty bottles in our recycling box, Ozzie tried to tell him that wasn't okay, and a scuffle ensued. Raccoons, which are carriers of rabies and other parasites, are getting to be more and more of an issue in urban environments.

All these raccoon stories seriously freak me out. Clearly they're much more intelligent and vicious than most people give them credit for.

bluebellknoll: Ahhhhhhhhh how HORRIFYING!!! Yeah, I'd quickly get over thinking raccoons were cute after seeing that as well.

Raccoons are cute...but vicious. I was at my friend's mom's house and she was telling me how the neighbors had banded together to get rid of the raccoons that were terrorizing the block. My friend's mom joined after seeing a raccoon climbing over her fence...holding onto a dead cat. Ack!

I just had a raccoon experience last week! They were just outside my apartment door and even though they fled from me before I even knew what was going on, a couple of them actually stopped several yards away and stared at me to see what move I would make. I heard that can be quite aggressive, so I was unnerved by the whole thing!

YES. My cat got out of my Haight area (S.F.) flat the other night and I went out to the backyard to look for her. Right on the other side of the fence on a neighbor's outdoor stairs' landing were the CUTEST pair of young raccoons tumbling around with each other and snuggling, and grooming each other, and generally looking adorable, and staring every so inquisitively at me between the bars. The cat wasn't there and so I went back inside to look for another twenty minutes, but still no luck, so I headed downstairs again. Guess who had somehow gotten around the 16' fences and were scrabbling down a trellis into my yard?? I was worried that they would freak out my missing cat even more, so I stomped my feet, shouted and them, and waved my arms. They not only didn't blink, but they kept climbing down towards me!!! They weren't so cute then, those brazen and shameless things! I had to pick up a patio table and act like I was going to hurl it on them, and even then they just sort of turned and ambled back over, like, 'OK we're going, but because we wanted to, not because of you. . .' Lol. This isn't the first time I've seen them though. There's a huge tribe in the middle of my block. PSLuckily I found my kitty in my basement--safe from raccoons (though it will always be a mystery how she got in there!).

I've seen raccoons. In fact, there was a rabid one on my block once not too long ago, but I don't know what happened to it. It would come out early in the morning or it would still be out from night. My sister hates raccoons and she used to see one all the time!!! We live in NY (the city) and there was a raccoon always outside of her building and whenever she tried to leave it would block her way even if she were across the street. It wouldn't let her pass and she would have to call a cab to leave. I used to laugh at her, but now I realize how scary that was. I was very young when I used to laugh at her though.

Never sen them before. They are so cute. But that is horrible about what happened to your dog.

No, thank goodness, raccoons are about the only thing we HAVEN'T had get into the yard. My monsters may have bested the skunk (debatable) and the possum, but I think they'd get their butts handed to them by a raccoon.Sorry about your pup. :(

Poor Ozzie! We see raccoons around LA every now and again. Sometimes they will come onto my mom's porch at night but leave if we turn the light on. It is amazing how big they can get. My dad lives in Danville (northern CA) and raccoons sometimes come through the dog door there and tear up the house...now they make sure to close it at night!

My family has a condo in Georgia and in our complex there is a common dumpster and every night as soon as it gets dark its just invaded by raccoons and cats that people let out of the house. I think raccoons are so gross so I never go to dump the trash after dark. And for the life of me I can't understand why people let their cats out because who knows what they're bringing home, especially after a night of hanging out with raccoons playing in the trash!

oh no...poor Ozzie! I currently have a squirrel and mouse/rat that have been visiting my yard and eating my birdseed and veggies. It is so hard to get rid of them without harming my pups!

I agree, they do look darn cute! What's not so cute is spending $300 at the emergency vet after your dog gets bitten all over her legs and ear, and having to put your pup on heavy duty antibiotics for two weeks due to the icky worms and diseases raccoons often carry. Beware of the cuteness!

I know they are dangerous and dirty...but just look at those faces! They are SO cute.

We have a possum problem, and Feral Cats. No raccoons yet but I fear they are next.

I've had to call animal control twice this year! One of the times, my boyfriend went to show them where the raccoon was (on a well used trail near our house) and the guy pulled out a gun and shot the raccoon right there! My boyfriend is a hunter, so you'd think he would be used to stuff like that, but he still said it was pretty brutal.
