Have You Ever Shopped at an Estate Sale?

I'm excited to see the new Nicole Holofcener film Please Give, starring Oliver Platt and Catherine Keener, who play an NYC couple who own a vintage design shop, where they hike up the prices of estate furniture. In the trailer, a customer asks, "Where do you find your stuff?" and Platt replies, "We buy from the children of dead people."

I've definitely shopped at estate sales before, but I've never really thought about it in such a sad way. Walking through an estate sale is really intriguing to me . . . it's like a time capsule, with all the furnishings left exactly where they were before the owner died. Have you bought estate furniture or shopped at an estate sale?

I've only been to ONE estate sale and that was many, many years ago. My sister goes to garage sales or estate sales almost every weekend, still, and she dragged me along back then. I was bored walking through the house looking at stuff, until I spotted a complete set of Dior Rose bedding (sheets, pillow cases, comforter). It was beautiful. There was a price of $100 on it so I pulled my sister over and told her I would pay $50. By the time Sis got through negotiating, I paid $20 bucks for the entire set!!! I was beyond thrilled. I kept that bedding for 15 years and finally threw it all away because it was "washed out." I've been to garage sales since but never estate sales.

Not *expensive* I mean *extensive.* I'm pretty sure it's all worthless but it suits my style perfectly.

Love anything second hand... when it comes to estate sales I've never BOUGHT anything at one, but my neighbor was friends with a woman who managed estate sales; when everything was done, he cleared all the junk out of the house for free but was allowed to keep whatever he wanted. I went with him MANY times and my most prized possessions are my gorgeous retro blonde wood furniture (two end tables, a corner table, coffee table W/ a leather top, and a 1956 full size record player) and my expensive costume jewelry collection. All free! I can't believe I'm telling this... but most of the people were recently dead and the food in their kitchens was still good. If there was something unopened and yummy, I would take it.

I love them for that same reason - they're like a time capsule. Also, I'm a huge garage sale junkie and estate sales are like a super garage sale.
