Cool Idea: Give a Lump of Coal This Christmas

Berkeley-based artist Anandamayi Arnold blurs the lines between naughty or nice with her sparkling lumps of black coal, otherwise known as surprise balls. Fittingly displayed as favors in Anthology's Winter Gift Guide, Arnold sells an assortment of enchanting surprise balls in every imaginable form, from flower bulbs to animals at Berkeley's Tail of the Yak. If you aren't close enough to visit the Bay Area shop in person, take a stab at creating your own version this year with this surprise ball tutorial.
