I normally showcase artsy, offbeat boutique hotels, but I figured it's time for something more traditional. L'Auberge del Mar, just North of San Diego's posh seaside town La Jolla, was designed by noted interior designer Barclay Butera — whose home is featured in the new book Designers Here and There. Staying true to Butera's aesthetic, it's grounded in European, American, and Eastern design, embracing a contemporary twist every so often. With marble countertops and ethereal lighting througout, it's sexy and stylish, but never gimmicky. Meanwhile, with friendly pitched roofs and gorgeous crown moldings, the architecture is magnificent. In essence, it's just what I'd want in a seaside resort after a day spent splashing in the ocean and getting in top shape at the tennis courts and fitness center: calm. Brides-to-be, this could be the place! Room rates start around $300/night.
