Why Johnny Depp Is Selling an Entire French Town

Johnny Depp is ready to unload a huge property in the South of France. According to The Wall Street Journal, Johnny's listed his massive French estate — which actually used to be an entire village — for $25.8 million. Cote d'Azur Sotheby's International Realty is handling the sale.

After purchasing the Plan de la Tour property, not far from the ritzy town of Saint-Tropez, in 2001, Johnny spent $10 million renovating and decorating each building by himself without a decorator. The property encompasses 12 buildings, including a main home, guest houses, a chapel, a restaurant, a workshop, his art studio, a fitness space, and a hunter's cabin. The estate's 37 acres feature a vegetable garden, a wine-tasting cave, two pools, and a skateboarding space. All of the fixtures and fittings are included in the purchase, allowing the new owner to posses a serious cache of Johnny Depp memorabilia. In the listing, the space is described as "utterly charming," "unique," and "bohemian."

Johnny seems to have decided to sell for personal reasons; he's no longer tied to the country after splitting from his longtime French partner, Vanessa Paradis, in 2012. Alexander Kraft, chairman and CEO of Sotheby's International Realty France, confirms that notion, saying, "Johnny has decided to sell the Plan de la Tour property to close this chapter of his life and move on."

When he's not on movie sets, Johnny now spends a good chunk of the year in Los Angeles with his new wife, Amber Heard. But don't feel too bad that Johnny is selling his one-of-a-kind getaway. He still, after all, owns a private island called Little Hall's Pond Cay in the Caribbean.
