Love It or Hate It? Excessive Plants on a Mantel

Today, President Barack Obama met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in the Oval Office of the White House. While I'm not a fan of gold frames in general (even when they're housing a lovely portrait of a founding father), I'm not sure what i think of the all-over ivy on the mantel behind the president and the prime minister. Would you ever coat a mantel with this much ivy?

first thing that comes to mind between the ivy and the frame is a very dated and cheesy (no pun intended) italian or greek restaurant.

Michael Smith will not be decorating the White House; he will only be doing the PRIVATE quarters of the First Family. None of the public areas will be redone. The ivy on the mantel in the Oval Office, along with the gold frame, has always been there and the plant is real, not plastic. There is a staff of 125 to care for the White House, so don't worry about the plants being dusty!!I like the ivy on the mantel but I would not want that on my mantel. Not my style. But then, the President is not supposed to have personal items on the mantel in the public spaces.

I'm really not feeling the ivy at all . . . but then again, what else could you decorate the mantel of the Oval Office with? Nothing I can think of would be classy enough for the job. . . . I don't envy whoever has the job of decorating in there.
