On the Market: SF Mayor Gavin Newsom's Prime Penthouse

Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom, who recently announced his candidacy for governor of California in the 2010 election, is on the move. Newsom has listed his 1-bedroom, 1.5-bath Russian Hill penthouse for $2.9 million, which he purchased from family friend Peter Getty for $2.35 million in February 2006. The spread sits in the Bellaire Tower, a 20-story, art-deco 1930 highrise, but it's undergone a complete interior Hollywood regency overhaul by Agins & Associates. While the views of three bridges and water would be enough for me to sign the dotted online instantly, the interior structure is stunning as well, with arched windows and beautiful moldings throughout. The interior design looks flawless, but I think it could use a little more personality and color. Take a look at photos and let me know what you think when you

I had the benefit of seeing the apartment before and after the remodel. The place had an antiquated galley style kitchen, a horrible chopped up floor plan, a gross bathroom with shower/tub combo, and scuffed ugly white walls with white trim. Not much charm to consider. What Newsom's decorator was able to do was pretty amazing. They spent a bunch of money remodeling with such good taste and high quality, that the place sold for 60k under asking price less than one month after being listed for sale. Some are saying it is the top price per square foot in the city. Say what you will about Gavin and his politics, but his decorator pulled off a coup for his client, at a time when most people are loosing money in the market. I guess anyone can mouth off on a blog, but the proof is in the facts. If the place was so "unfortunate", it would not have sold for nearly asking so quickly!

The rug is from a collection Oscar de la Renta designed for Elson & Company, back in 2006. Here is a link to the current collection. http://www.elsoncompany.com/collection_detail.php?id=26# This rug, patterned after an ancient Islamic design, was the inspiration for the more affordable PB and West Elm versions. A third color was added to highlight the overlayed pattern.

Where oh where can I find that amazing Moroccan-style rug in the living room? I've seen comparable ones at PB and West Elm, but love Gavin's!!
