Painted in 2002 by Gary Lang, Circle Ojai #1 ($65,000) is a gorgeous, massive — at five feet square— work of art. I was immediately struck by the movement and colors in this piece, and while I covet it (immensely), it's quite likely that its price point will eliminate it from finding a place in my home art collection. Luckily, you can replicate this painting's look for only a few hundred dollars. Keep reading to see how you can get the look of the modern, circular artwork.
This Set of 12 Tree Ring Paintings from artist and craftsperson Tracy Melton has the same look and brilliant colors as Gary Lang's work. Each piece is made from standing dead red elm trees in northern Indiana, which are then cut on a band saw, rigorously sanded, and sealed to preserve and accentuate the tree rings and texture of the wood. Melton then applies acrylic paint by hand and two coats of Minwax Gloss Poly-crylic.
Curious as to how it looks hung? We featured Melton's work in this bedroom tour.
