Open House: How Do You Feel About Televisions in the Bedroom?

Studies show that keeping a television in the bedroom isn't healthy. For couples, a television in the bedroom can cut their sex life in half. Teenagers with TVs in their bedrooms participate in less physical activity, fewer social engagements, and often have lower grades, according to the journal Pediatrics.

Despite these findings, televisions are a popular feature in many bedrooms. Some couples find that their differing tastes in television shows often make a second TV a welcome way to avoid fighting over the remote (especially on Super Bowl weekend). Some couples also enjoy relaxing with a favorite show or movie before falling asleep.

Do you have a television in your bedroom? How do you feel about televisions in bedrooms? Tell me all of the reasons for keeping the television in your bedroom, and why you think it works in the space. Or, if you're not a fan of having a TV in the bedroom, tell me your reasons for that as well!

No no no! We had a TV in the bedroom in our last house and my boyfriend would always watch TV at night. He thinks it's relaxing, but it keeps me up and I can't relax bathed in all that blue light. So, no more TV in the bedroom. I sleep SO much better now.

I have a television in my bedroom and I agree with Sophia182. I got it because I noticed that I could fall asleep in the living room watching TV really fast. But when it came to lying in the silent dark in my own room trying to fall asleep, all I could think about was the day or stuff I had to do. It's like the TV distracts me from my racing mind and I'm able to fall asleep. So I got one for my room. It always helps me fall asleep :)I didn't get it til college though. My parents didn't allow a television in my room when I was a kid/teenager.

My guy and I have a TV in our room, and for us it really works. Like you said it's nice to have if we both don't feel like watching the same show. But to be honest we don't use it very often so I don't see it interfering with any other aspects of our lives at all ;) Hehe it's just a nice convenience sometimes to have it!

I only really want a TV in my room when I'm sick! My bed is far more comfortable than my couch.

I have one now, but rarely watch it (if ever) because I only get basic cable and have no dvr or guide remote, so I will only sometimes turn it on to fall asleep or as background noise. I am far to spoiled now to waste time channel surfing. I like to go to my list of taped shows or the guide and find something I like or not turn it on at all. In my last apartment my TV in my bedroom was coming in primarily spanish--so that put a damper on things. I couldn't have it on in the mornings even for the Today show. The cable co. said it was the TV's fault. That is kind of when I realized it wasn't something I needed. I may take it out all together when I move again. However, I hate when people say that they don't have a TV in the house/bedroom but stay up and watch shows/movies on their computer, its the same thing!

I had a tv in my bedroom for years and took it out for a year and then moved one back in and now it is without again. It wasn't a big deal really and I may think about putting one in again. I didn't notice a difference with or without.

I have a TV in my room. I only use it in the morning to watch the Today show while I get ready and I use it to help put me to sleep. I like the glow and the noise. It soothes me.

I have heard having a TV in your bedroom is unhealthy, but I personally find it beneficial. I watch dvds when I'm trying to go to sleep and it makes me sleepy - I fall asleep in about 20 minutes. Before I had a TV in my bedroom, at bedtime I would lie awake for hours thinking about what happened that day and all the things I knew I had to do the next day. I tried so many different relaxation techniques but nothing compares to watching dvds of a favourite old tv show. Give it a try if you can.

That's a big no from me! It makes the bedroom feel less calming and actually affects your sleep. We mostly agree on what to watch, so there's no need to have more than one TV.

It depends on the space, but for me, generally, no TV in the bedroom. We have a separate room for the TV, so there's no need for it to be in the bedroom.

My husband grew up in a house with a TV in every room but I put my foot down- one TV only. I'd rather spend the time with him, even if I have to watch 24.

I simply don't need a TV in the bedroom. I rarely ever sit down and watch a movie or show, I usually am doing something else at the same time, like folding clothes. Also, if friends come over, I'd like to be in the living room, not my bedroom. And lastly, I think I'd end up staying up longer every day and watching stuff I don't even really want to see.

Last year a rude neighbor with a heavy bass stereo moved in and made my living room inhabitable for several months, so a friend of mine gave me her old tv and I had the cable routed back there. After Mr. Rude moved on and everything went back to normal, I haven't turned on the tv back there once!
