Open House: Your Biggest Splurge

For many homeowners, the largest cost of decorating their home is a renovation. For renters, it's often a large, portable piece of furniture such as a sofa or armoire that costs the big bucks. Others pull out the Mastercard for a stunning rug, an eye-catching painting, or an iconic light fixture. Of course, once you've splurged on a focal point for one room, it's on to the next. It's kind of like having children: You don't stop paying until retirement. My most extravagant purchase was a piece of artwork, but now we're making plans to throw down on building a small "getaway" behind our house.

Furniture is definitely my biggest splurge. I buy vintage mid-century pieces from a local dealer on a regular basis. Some are steals, like great no-name coffee and side tables. But my biggest splurge has been my vintage Eames lounge chair and ottoman. Even at its high price tag, we still got a great deal on it so I couldn't pass it up!

When my husband and I moved into our new house and out of the studio apartment we'd lived in for years, we were both so excited to move on from the days of futon couches. We couldn't wait for "grown-up" sofas. We went overboard and bought a couch & chaise lounge set for $4000. We love them but over 2 years later still refuse to eat on them!! A little impractical since they're placed in front of the tv.Which I guess has the benefit of not letting us eat in front of the tv which I've heard is the easiest way to consume mindless calories. Still, it's impractical

Our couch was the most expensive. We rent, and we're still in college, so we own a lot of hand me downs. BTW, the comment link is above now, not below :)(I also wish spell check would come back!)

$1000 couch from Room & Board (or, if you're counting pairs, the 2 $600/each chairs from Room & Board).

I think our biggest splurge would be a custom-made, double-pane window for our large bay window.
