Open House: Your Parents' Style

Open House: Your Parents' Style

This is a snapshot of my mother's living room, filled with antiques and plenty of outdated '80s/'90s textiles. Were she to redecorate today, I can guarantee she'd opt for a loose, more livable space. But, her taste remains colorful, traditional, and sophisticated. While I wouldn't mind winding up with a few of the pieces in this room (Louis XV chairs, secretary desk, mirror, maybe the coffee table), my style is certainly a departure from hers, and I might even consider painting some of the furniture. I prefer cleaner lines and fewer colors — more modern in general. How about you? How does your style compare to that of your parents? Has their décor style changed through the years? Do they adapt to trends? Would you like to inherit any of their furniture? Tell me by commenting below!

My parents definitely have a style but it is the COMPLETE opposite of mine. They are into crazy colors everywhere, while my style is more reserved. They're always trying to give me things and don't understand why I wouldn't overstuff my apartment with things just because my grandma is clearing out my great-aunt's apartment full of gorgeous antiques. They also have been trying to get me to take a piano from them even thought I have NO space in my small apartment for them. They think I should "squeeze" it in.

My mother's style is far more modern than mine....she is very traditional/contemporary which is interesting because I am more modern/country/funky.

Your mother's room looks trendy and lacking antiques to me. There are no pictures on the wall, no curtains, no accessories. I find it hard to believe she's an antique collector, and I don't see much to gripe about.

My mother has a few items I wouldn't mind snagging, but that's about it. For the most part, her decorating style is just bland. She doesn't have bad taste at all, but it's just very safe -- lots of neutral colors and basic furniture pieces. I have a mental list of renovations I would LOVE to do to my parents' house.

I'm really not into my parents style. My mom is a mix of traditional and a little country, while my dad is a mix of uber modern/contemporary (too slick for me) and ethnic.. Needless to say, it takes talent far beyond what any of them have to seamlessly blend their styles! Sorry Mom & Dad! If I were to inherit any furniture from a relative I'd choose it to be my grandma -- she's still got some pieces from the 50s-60s, particularly a yellow chair I've had my eye on since I was a little kid!

My parent's style is summed up in one word:Beige.Needless to say, they leave all of the designing to me.

My parents (separated) are by no means rich or well-off enough for me to want much of their furniture. Even growing up I never really cared for their decorating style. ..with my husband I was lucky to inherit some very nice antique pieces, though. I redid and take care of them very well. I hope to one day buy some more modern pieces to mix with them and my art. (I'm buying things slowly but surely.. I don't use credit cards, so that makes it feel more slow. Recently, I did buy us a comfy king-size bed. And a smaller flat-screen. And a [used] car. I'm trying... But --) I'm only 28, so I'm still trying to make my home look and feel like 'me'..and US even... sometimes I think I have it... and then sometimes I feel lost. If I had a bigger budget to work with I would probably have it figured out. But for now I'm still watching and looking around and learning. :)

i did take my mothers antique cabinet... she broke the leaded glass the day before we picked it up... so i still need to fix that & reset the shelves... but that's the only piece i really liked. my mom's gotta lotta country stuff going on (and she lives in QUEENS), my style is more a mix of antique and simple modern... i like the history but i like it updated...

My parents have no furniture style whatsoever. They've always bought the bulky sofa sets with the coffee, end tables and lamps included. On top of that they always covered the sofas with plastic covers!!! I don't think I ever wanted a piece of their furniture when I moved out.

My brother came to visit this weekend and when he saw my new sofa he said "Hey, I recognize this sofa. It looks just like mom's!" Does that answer your question?? I would take my mom's house in a heartbeat, furniture, decor, paint and all. But I promise the duplication of her sofa was an accident :)

My mom adapts well to new trends, but she is really bad at incorporating it in with left over pieces. So her living rooms looks somewhat similar to the photo. She has a modern couch and coffee table, but the pictures on the wall all need to be re framed, imo. I really prefer very clean lines and a minimalist approach to decorating.

My parents have a very eclectic style. They travel to places most people couldn't find on a map. Basically the house looks like it was decorated at Cost Plus World Market... except the cool pieces were actually picked up around the world. I love the look, but I haven't had the time to fill my house up with story-pieces yet.

I'm exactly the same as sonya ina. Though my dad also loves antique oregon pine furniture, which I also like. They have good taste.

My parents have GREAT style -- very modern, just like my own. If I could acquire all my parents living room, dining room, and kitchen furniture/appliances, I'd be a happy camper! The one thing that differs about my parents and I is that they are scared to paint their walls anything but white. I on the other hand, enjoy bold colors :]
