Are Sofa Beds More Trouble Than They're Worth?

Are Sofa Beds More Trouble Than They're Worth?

Many people — myself included — have sofa beds to accomodate extra guests. But convertible sleepers are so uncomfortable, I feel bad making anyone sleep on mine! They're also very heavy to move, and I wonder if an air mattress wouldn't be a better option. What do you think?

I haven't ever seen a sofa bed that is my style. I have slept on an air mattress, however, that was as comfortable as most beds, and MORE comfortable than most hotel beds. It also inflated itself pretty quietly, while my friend and I laid on it for the ride. :) Sofa beds aren't as much fun!

I would pick a sofa bed over an air mattress or futon any day. Whenever I sleep on an air mattress, I wake up in the middle of the night to find that it's lost half of the air. I also spent 9 months sleeping on a futon and besides having back problems because of it, woke up every day in fear that the thing would collapse on me if I moved the wrong way. I like urbngirl's daybed suggestion.

To me a futon or air mattress is no more comfortable then a sofa bed and they are also a lot harder to store. A sofa bed is a great option for someone without a guest room. You can always offer your guests your room and you can sleep on the sofa bed if it really bothers you. I have a sectional couch that can accommodate two people laying down and it's much more comfortable. If your guests are appalled by your sofa bed tell them to stay at a hotel and find some new friends.

Unless they've changed from back in the day, yes they are more trouble than they are worth.

Real quick - whose sofa bed looks like the one above. Mine (and I feel like 99% of the rest of the population) is sooo much flatter... k, sorry! I love mine though, it sleeps MUCH better than it looks. The only thing I could do without is the moving. MAN that thing is heeeeavy!

I will never buy a sofa sleeper again! It's not worth it! With ours when you pull out the bed, if you don't sit on it correctly tips the couch forward a little. Bad design! Bad, bad design! Recently I picked up a raised air mattress and it works a lot better and is at height closer to a real bed.

Futons and air mattresses are fine unless you have back problems. We recently got a beautiful king-sized sofa bed from American Leather. It cost us an arm and a leg but it is so worth it. My 6'4" husband can sleep on it without hanging off the edge.

Air mattresses are totally the way to go! We have a double-high queen air mattress and it's wonderfully comfortable!! Since it's deeper than the typical air mattress, even if it loses a lil air, you don't end up sleeping on the ground.

No I don't like them. They are SO heavy and they usually aren't that comfortable anyway.

Air mattresses work perfectly for being cheap and comfortable.

I slept on the best sofa bed ever. I think it was a Serta mattress...it looks like a normal pillow top mattress except you unzip the top and inside is an air mattress. And it all folds up into the couch after you deflate it.

There is an amazing sleeper sofa at a local home store which is actually super comfy and now I can't find the name of the brand. We almost got it, but it didn't really work in our house. It's a great brand where you can get chairs, loveseats and couches in sleepers. Anything from a twin to a large Queen sized bed.

it could definitely be because i have a crazy back, but i always find sofa beds to be really comfortable. we have one in our living room and i sleep on it from time to time when my back is really bothering me.

Right now we have a semi-comfortable futon in our guest room. But while I thought it was built for 2, it's really only for 1. So we end up giving up our queen bed to our guests b/c we feel bad for making them sleep on a too small bed. We plan on getting a sofa bed for the room instead. We thought about a day-bed, but I've not found any I like. The room is more of a reading room when there aren't guests over so we don't want the floor taken up with a regular bed and I'm not a fan of air mattresses - the ones I've been on tend to leak too much!

I slept in a sofa bed over this past weekend my back is still messes up 5 days later. I thinking sleeping on the floor might have been a better idea
