Stella McCartney Milan Store Uses Designer Raw-Edges to Create New Parquet Floors

Cool Idea: Playful Parquet Floors

Who says that parquet has to stick to wood tones? Israeli designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay (aka Raw-Edges) would certainly beg to differ with anyone espousing that opinion.

Parquetry, which consists of small blocks of hardwood glued down onto a subfloor such as concrete, was most popular between the Edwardian period and the 1930s, and can be found throughout houses from that era. To me, it's always felt a bit dated, even though I appreciate the technique. That's why I was so thrilled to stumble across Mer and Alkalay's work. I especially love the lively colors that they used here in the Stella McCartney Milan store, which is located in an 18th-century building on via Santo Spirito.

Want to see more of their work? You can find their designs in the permanent collection of the MoMA New York and The Design Museum London, as well as in production with Cappellini, Established & Sons, and Arco.
