YumSugar editor Katie has been working on decorating her studio lately and came to me for a little advice. In addition to a real cowhide rug (she accidentally ordered a polypropylene one), one of the big items on her shopping list is a storage bench — another multipurpose piece I wish I'd owned in my old studio. She's been eyeing the Urban Outfitters Jet Set Storage Bench ($248), but she's not keen on the fact that it's vinyl. I'm hesitant to recommend UO furniture because I don't find it to be great quality, as stylish as it may be.
There are a range of storage benches and ottomans on the market though, from as little as $70 to upwards of $700. Unfortunately, there aren't too many nice, affordable, upholstered ones to choose from. I think my favorite that I've discovered is the Country Living Antique White Storage Bench ($100) from KMart. Its bun feet may need to be spray-painted in a black or brown paint to axe the cottage look, but it does have neutral button-tufted linen fabric and sophisticated nailhead trim. I'm also loving the idea of using the Crate & Barrel Ascend Sliding Door Storage Unit ($500) as a bench. It's available in espresso or white and is modern and discreet. The pink patterned bench above (from Lonny) is very chic, too — perhaps DIY upholstering a cheap storage ottoman is an option?
