I can't stress enough that you should shop from the bride and groom's wedding registry, if possible. But if there's not much left to choose from or you want to go the extra mile to give a truly special gift, I have an idea for you. Choose a sterling silver (not silver plate) letter tray either from the registry or that you know will fit the couple's tastes. Bring it into a jeweler along with the couple's wedding invitation and have the text of the invitation engraved on the tray.
Some style tips: unless the couple is decidedly modern, choose an elegant, timeless serif font (i.e. Times New Roman, Garamond, etc). For more contemporary newlyweds, choose a sans-serif font (Helvetica, Arial, etc.). Whatever their style, choose a simple, classic tray shape, such as a rectangle with square or rounded edges and not too much ornamentation. Also, whatever the alignment of the original invitation, have the text centered on the tray. Give the jeweler the invitation or a copy of it, so you don't risk any spelling errors.
