Video of Spruce Home Upholstering a Chair

A Little Look at the Process of Upholstery

My knowledge of the upholstery process is really limited, and it's a skill I've always wanted to learn. Upholstery is no doubt a time-consuming, labor-intensive process, and even an introductory class — if you're lucky enough to find one in your area — requires months of training. So my guess is that it will remain on my bucket list for a long time. That said, it's a truly fascinating process to me, and I really admire those talented souls who turn out terrific tufting and revive dilapidated furniture.

Spruce Home, a studio based out Austin, TX, recently let Etsy in on its approach with this wonderful video of the two Southern gals breathing life into an old side chair. Watch it from start to finish; I have no doubt it'll spark your interest, and you may learn a thing or two. Did you know some people upholster with horse hair and hay?

My Mom and her friend are reupholstering a chair my Mom bought from Habitat for Humanity thrift store. It was filled with horse hair (apparently it was from the 1930's!). The friend grew up with her family doing upholstery work...but that was along time ago. She's in her late 70's now. I would love to learn how to do this!! To buy an ugly couch with a great design but recover it to make it mine. Love love love!
