What Can Be Composted and Recycled

Compost, Recycle, or Trash? Part Two

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, I've been learning some new things about composting. So I want to test your trash smarts. I'll give you an item, and you tell me whether it should be composted, recycled, or tossed in the trash. As we learned in part one, rules vary from region to region, but I'm going with the most common answers, so let's get started.

ella: yes, I have two actually, and they are in wire bins (from gardener's supply - they look better than, say, chicken wire). I'd say they are in 75% shade. It MAY take longer to get compost this way, but we've had lots of success :) - wheelbarrows of compost harvested! I have tried the plastic container and didn't get nearly as good results --- you have to keep up with the water content and I was just too lazy to do that. Plus the rolling container attracted roaches, which the open bins do not. Message me if you want any more info!

4/5. Huh, I didn't realize juice boxes have foil inside. I was thinking they were just like waxed milk cartons, which are recyclable here. ella, my compost pile is in the shade and very productive.

Oh, you caught me with the juice boxes.. the first one I've missed so far! I wish we had collected composting in my area. My yard does not have an area that receives sun that is large enough to compost.. it bums me out! My only solution would be to compost in my front yard.. I think the city would frown on that!
