What Was Your First Original Art Purchase?

Open House: What Was Your First Original Art Purchase?

Ever since I bought my photograph from Samantha West, I've been trying to restrain myself from going on an artwork shopping binge. It's not the first time I've purchased an original but it's revived an interest in photography, painting, and artwork of all sorts for me. It's really exciting to own a bona fide piece of artwork, and it's really what makes a house a home. Do you have any original artwork? What was the first piece you purchased? Where did you buy it? Tell me in the comments below!

I didn't actually buy my first piece of original art, as I've been taking pictures since I was a kid, but I did spend the money to have them professionally printed and framed.

The first original artwork I bought are two large, black and white photography pieces of orchids. They're closeup and very sensual. I bought them at an annual art festival (Pecan Street Festival) here in Austin with my very first bonus from my very first post-college job. I still love them. That was a little over three years ago, and since then, I've slowly been acquiring more and more art. I also make my own art. :)

I bought a watercolor of dragons from a local artist. My family is one of her patrons - my dad's house looks like an art gallery of her things! I have a few others of her paintings that were gifts or were "stolen" from my parents' house.

My first beloved piece of original art was not purchased, per se. I came upon it when my husband and I married and moved in together. I was unpacking our belongings, and found a water painting he did when he was in grade school. The work was lovely, and as a child, he had a good hand (in my opinion). It's one of my favorite art pieces.
