Have a Small Closet? You HAVE to See This Ikea Closet Makeover

Small-space living unfortunately also means small closets. It's a constant battle to see how high we can stack things and just how many hangers we can squeeze in there. We can dream of the decked-out closet rooms we see on HGTV, but fortunately, an organized, functional closet is closer than you think.

In one day, Amanda Katherine transformed her small closet from a bulging disarray to a roomy, organized space with the help of none other than Ikea. Catch her key tips here and visit Amanda Katherine for the full tutorial.

1. Purge Like Crazy

1. Purge Like Crazy

Go through your closet and get rid of everything you haven't worn in the last year, anything ill-fitting or with holes, and only keep the pieces you actually love to wear. This will help clear up wasted space.

2. Identify Your Closet Needs

2. Identify Your Closet Needs

What storage are you lacking and how can you improve it? I needed better accessible storage for t-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, and shoes. The current shelving I had was too high to reach for day-to-day items and my shoes didn't have an actual home. My closet had so much empty space that was useless, so it was important to maximize every inch.

3. Create Your Ikea Algot System

The wonderful thing about Ikea's Algot system is it is customizable for your every need. Because I needed more accessible shelving, I chose a system with lots of shelving and drawers. I used the shelving at the top for items like sweatshirts I don't need until the cooler months. When Winter comes, I can rearrange or have a stool on hand for the hard-to-reach items. The Algot accessories, like the hook and belt holder, are perfect additions to keep belts, purses, and scarves organized.
