Many of music's biggest names stepped out at the American Music Awards in LA tonight. The ladies, including Kelly Rowland, Christina Aguilera, and Nicki Minaj, brought the glamour with their red-carpet looks. Performer and nominee Taylor Swift sparkled in a Zuhair Murad mini while Pink, who arrived with husband Carey Hart, went long in Catherine Deane. Carrie Underwood chose a colorful lace look by Abed Mahfouz before taking the stage to perform during the show. Gwen Stefani switched things up in an embellished Balmain jacket and leather leggings as she arrived with her No Doubt bandmates, and Jordin Sparks showed skin in a cutout Etro gown on the arm of boyfriend Jason Derulo. Now and Then: Stars at the AMAs
Even with newbies like The Wanted, Psy, and Carly Rae Jepsen performing at the AMAs, tonight's 40th anniversary of the award show has seemed like a blast from the past. The red carpet was visited by a variety of popular musicians from years past, from Gloria Estefan to 50 Cent, Cyndi Lauper to Linkin Park, Brandy to Usher, and No Doubt to Backstreet Boys. Many of these pop, rap, and rock stars have a history of attending the AMAs, so let's take a look at their presence at tonight's show compared to back in the day!

Girls Just Want to Have Fun at the 2012 AMAs
The stars came out for the 2012 American Music Awards tonight, and the women definitely represented. Taylor Swift won the trophy for favorite country female artist for the fifth year in a row, proving her staying power, while Gwen Stefani led the boys of No Doubt on stage. The talented women in attendance seemed to enjoy the show and each other, posing for photos on the red carpet with fans, performing on stage, or watching everything from the audience. Shimmer, Shine, and Embellishments — Par For the Course at the AMAs
If ever there was an argument that metallics and embellishments are this season's answer to sheer and cutouts, the starlets in attendance at the American Music Awards made the case in spades. There was no shortage on shiny details, beaded accents, and all-out gold disco-ball finishes, and we've got to say: the gilded effect only improved upon the eye-catching ensembles. High on the list of shimmery trendsetters? Carrie Underwood stole the show in a purple lace Abed Mahfouz gown that was dripping in intricately embellished patterns, Taylor Swift nailed the minidress look in a metallic gold Zuhair Murad number that just happened to up the wattage with beaded floral appliqués, and Stacy Keibler showed off her enviable legs in a ultrashort — and very bejeweled — Collette Dinnigan mini. If girlier embellishments on dresses aren't your statement-makers of choice, then look to Gwen Stefani's just-as-cool sequined Balmain jacket for edgier inspiration. There are at least eight more shining examples inside, so click through to see how these celebs wore the evening's standout trend.

It's been 40 years since the first American Music Awards, a tradition started by the late Dick Clark. Who Had the Best Bob at the American Music Awards?

A few typically long-haired starlets decided to do something different for the American Music Awards this year. Brandy, Christina Aguilera, and Kerry Washington all wore shorter-than-usual strands on the red carpet. Brandy's waist-grazing lengths were folded under into a wavy faux bob that pulled together her '20s-inspired ensemble. Christina sidestepped her dip-dyed hair for a shorter and straighter bob (a wig, perhaps), and Kerry Washington went for a cropped and tucked curly bob. But of all these temporary haircuts, which one made a lasting impression?
American Music Awards Trend Alert: Lush Eyelashes

A red carpet always calls for amped-up glamour, but the eyelashes at the 2012 American Music Awards were above and beyond. With loads of mascara and plenty of false lashes thrown in for good measure, three ladies made this look something to talk about. Always one for over-the-top style, Nicki Minaj donned heavy top lashes that brought a seductive edge to her appearance. Taking the mod look to modern times, Ginnifer Goodwin exaggerated her bottom lashes by clumping them together and adding multiple coats of mascara. And Ke$ha kept things even more alluring with fanned-out lower lashes that you could see across the room.
To nail the trend, reach for a lengthening mascara, such as Benefit They're Real! Mascara ($23), or pick up a pack of individual lashes, like these ones from Make Up For Ever ($16). Whichever method you choose, you'll be sure to make a showstopping statement.
