How To

The Easiest Way to Clean a Blender

If you're obsessed with making on-the-go smoothies like some of us, chances are that countertop blender will be in heavy cleaning rotation.

If you're obsessed with making on-the-go smoothies like some of us, chances are that countertop blender will be in heavy cleaning rotation. But don't worry, these kitchen electrics are among the easiest of cooking appliances to clean.

I have my mother, a longtime Vitamix devotee, to thank for this tip: the quickest way to clean a blender is to add water and then blend it!

Fill your blender a little over halfway with hot water, add a drop of dish-washing liquid if desired, then blend on low first. If the water level's not reached high enough to clean the blending container, raise the power level to high. Rinse (and repeat, if necessary). Is this how you clean your blender, too?

Blender

Off to Market Recap: Immersion Blender

The immersion blender is a great kitchen gadget that's especially useful in cooler months when soup making is a frequent activity.

The immersion blender is a great kitchen gadget that's especially useful in cooler months when soup making is a frequent activity. Although I have an immersion blender I love, DearSugar does not.

I asked you to help me find her the perfect immersion blender. You headed off to market in search of practical, functional blenders with strong blades. You saved the sticks in the Yum Market on TeamSugar with the keyword tag, Immersion Blender.

W swears by her Bamix Swissline blender. With its "powerful motor, easy-to-clean attachments that work very well and effectively, and stretchy cord," she refers to it as a "godsend." For more immersion blenders — ideal for making pumpkin soup — browse the selection below.

Fergie

Big Fergies Definitely Do Cry

Fergie looks a little too airbrushed all sexed up (surprise, surprise) for the January issue of Blender.

Fergie looks a little too airbrushed all sexed up (surprise, surprise) for the January issue of Blender. The magazine named her woman of the year, prompting both a few tears from the Fergalicious singer and for her to open up about all sorts of things. Yeah, apparently if you get a few drinks in her, she'll talk about peeing onstage . . . and being in love with Josh Duhamel. Here are highlights:

  • On being named woman of the year: “I might not be the most talented person in the world. . . . I might not have the best voice. I might not be the prettiest or the best dancer. But I’ve worked very hard, and I’ve gone through humiliation. That’s why winning an award means so much more to me than it does to other people.”
  • On not needing to marry Josh: "We’re practically married, anyway. I’m madly in love with him. He understands how to treat a woman and give me respect. And I’m gonna miss him on tour. [Her eyes start to drip, and then she turns mean.] Here I go again. Don’t make me cry, you f*****."
  • On fame: “It’s like there’s one or two things the public knows about every famous person. . . . With Ashlee Simpson, everyone knows she had a nose job. With me, everyone knows I wet my pants onstage and had a crystal-meth addiction; that sucks. You have to laugh.”

While, sure, Fergs seems a little off kilter, you have to love her honesty and ability to be self-deprecating. Hell, she even talks about how much her dad hates "London Bridge." She may not be winning our most improved of 2007 poll, but she gets my vote. To see Fergie behind the scenes at her shoot just read more

Blender's "100 Days That Changed Music"

Over on the music blog The Music Slut, I discovered that Blender has put out a list of the 100 Days That Changed Music.

Over on the music blog The Music Slut, I discovered that Blender has put out a list of the 100 Days That Changed Music. Some are more obvious than others, some are somewhat ridiculous (Dr. Dre finding Eminem is No. 6? Out of 100?), but some are downright fascinating. I never knew, for example that when the Kingsmen recorded "Louie Louie" in 1965, people interpreted singer Jack Ely’s incomprehensible mumbling to be masking obscenity, causing the first panic over dirty lyrics. Or that karaoke arrived in America in 1982 "at a bar called Dimples in Burbank, California."

What do you think of these days deemed all-important in music history? I've picked out a few of my favorites and included them to the top ten of the list which you can see if you read more

DIY: From Blender to Blamp

This one is an oldie but goodie.

This one is an oldie but goodie. I tore the instructions out of ReadyMade magazine about three years ago, and ever since, I've been meaning to make a lamp out of my old avocado-green blender. Procrastination aside, this project is too great not to share; if you manage to get yours done before I do, I'd love to see the results.

ReadyMade suggests raiding an old lamp for parts, though you can easily buy all of your supplies at a hardware store, and don't forget to make sure the blender is unplugged before disassembling it! For a list of what you'll need and step-by-step instructions, read more

Kristin Cavallari

Kristin Cavallari Gets All Hot For Blender

Kristin Cavallari almost had a scary run in with Jessica at the Teen Choice Awards last night.

Kristin Cavallari almost had a scary run in with Jessica at the Teen Choice Awards last night. Love the drama. OAN reports that the two blondes shared the red carpet at one point. Oh I love the drama. Here's more:

But perhaps the most astonishing moment was when the show’s host, Jessica Simpson, who was there early, left the Amphitheater and walked the red carpet in reverse direction. While she was posing and smiling for the cameras, along came starlet Kristin Cavallari, who had a brief fling with Simpson’s ex, Nick Lachey, and who was Simpson’s rival for a role in the movie Dallas. Cavallari simply turned on her heel and stalked off in the opposite direction, as everyone stared in open-mouthed amazement.

Kristin may have walked away in a huff, but she still looks super hot in Blender this month. Maybe this is why she and Brody keep getting back together. TMZ has a video of the two heading to Hyde the other night. This goes back to my theory that these two simply break up for the press and hang with Nick and Nicole to get their picture taken.
