Contagion

Matt Damon stars in this drama as a man whose wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) is the first victim of a deadly virus. As he grieves and tries to keep himself and his daughter safe, the world goes through crisis, and several other characters try to solve the mystery of how and where the disease broke out. Stephen Soderbergh directed this thriller, which boasts an ensemble of A-listers that includes Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Marion Cotillard. The subject matter may make you feel like a germaphobe, but the movie is a tense and entertaining ride. The DVD extras include several featurettes.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

A woman (Katie Holmes) moves into a decrepit mansion with her boyfriend (Guy Pearce) and his daughter, but their home life is less than idyllic when the little girl starts complaining about being tormented by creatures in the house. Guillermo del Toro produced and co-wrote the horror film (a remake of a '70s made-for-TV movie), but his touch doesn't save the film from feeling a bit formulaic. A three-part making-of documentary is included as a DVD extra.

Contagion: Feverishly Entertaining

In Contagion, we watch as a deadly new disease wreaks havoc on the world — a premise that's terrifying for obvious reasons.

In Contagion, we watch as a deadly new disease wreaks havoc on the world — a premise that's terrifying for obvious reasons. Hopefully that fear doesn't keep people from seeing it, because director Steven Soderbergh delivers an entertaining, fast-paced film that mines disaster for thrills. Matt Damon tops a vast ensemble cast of other acting heavyweights, such as Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Laurence Fishburne. Each character has a thread pertinent to the crisis, starting with Damon's Midwestern everyman whose wife (Paltrow) is one of the first patients to fall victim to the disease. The rest make up a slate of doctors, scientists, and bystanders who are all trying to make sense of the devastating infection.

The tension of the film is amplified by the mystery of how quickly the infection is spread, and what its origins are. Contagion inspires double-pronged fear: what's worse, the fatal virus threatening to wipe out the population, or the hysteria and paranoia that inspires the living to turn against each other? Soderbergh provides a strong case for both as he explores a fictional outbreak that, alarmingly, feels like it could happen. To find out more, just keep reading

Matt Damon arrived hand in hand with his lovely wife, Luciana, at tonight's NYC premiere of Contagion. The couple posed for photos before Matt went on to meet up with Marion Cotillard and director Steven Soderbergh on the red carpet. It was a wild day for Matt, who kicked things off before dawn with appearances on The Today Show and Live With Regis and Kelly. Matt touched on the seriousness of infectious disease, the focus of the film, and then switched gears to a lighter subject when he revealed he'll be dropping three of his daughters off for the first day of school this week. Marion arrived on the East Coast with her son, Marcel, recently and was also busy hitting the talk show circuit. She dropped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon this afternoon and is scheduled to visit The Daily Show With Jon Stewart tomorrow. Matt and Marion's costar Gwyneth Paltrow stepped out to promote the film in Venice over the weekend, but tonight she missed out on the Big Apple screening. Instead, Gwyneth partied with friends in London.
