4th of July Quiz: How Well Do You Know Your Country (Music)?

When reflecting on all things American this 4th of July, I think of apple pie, representative democracy, Elvis, reality television, stuff like that.

When reflecting on all things American this 4th of July, I think of apple pie, representative democracy, Elvis, reality television, stuff like that. Of all the things I associate with this land of ours, few things strike me as uniquely American as country music, and whether you love it or loathe it, I bet you know a thing or two about it.

Some of the best musical artists we Americans get to claim came out of this genre, including Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and Dolly Parton. So in honor of this grand country and some of music's greats, I challenge you to test your knowledge about country music!

Song of the Day: Smashing Pumpkins, "Landslide"

You know Stevie Nicks wrote a damn fine song if both The Dixie Chicks and Billy Corgan can sound great singing it.

You know Stevie Nicks wrote a damn fine song if both The Dixie Chicks and Billy Corgan can sound great singing it. Not surprisingly, I'm loving this cover of "Landslide" recorded by The Smashing Pumpkins for the 1994 album Pisces Iscariot.

This bittersweet acoustic version is a great showcase for Corgan's fragile vocals and a welcome foil to the more metallic sound on the Pumpkins' new album, Zeitgeist, which hits stores today. On past releases, I really enjoyed the way Corgan (performing at Live Earth, at left) balanced harder rock tunes with ballads, and I wish Zeitgeist had a bit more of the latter. Jessica and John's Post Grammy Coming Out Party

Beyonce may have played host at the People party last night after the Grammys, but she didn't call it a night at that event.

Beyonce may have played host at the People party last night after the Grammys, but she didn't call it a night at that event. After her duties were over, she headed off to the Sony/BMG party to meet up with non-Grammy winners the Simpson Sisters, and Grammy winners the Dixie Chicks, John Legend and Carrie Underwood. (Someday Simpsons, someday.) The red carpet is all well and good, but the real excitement came inside the party in the form of a little photoshoot displaying a certain new couple (hint: it's Jessica and John Mayer...and they look amazing).

Right, so when John stumped the world (you know, other than those who speak Japanese, and btw, I'd like to know if he was saying everything correctly) on the red carpet, with his "you'll be the last to know" bit he actually meant "you'll all know in a couple of hours." Nice.

Lots more pics from the red carpet so read more
