Fireflies in the Garden

I feel compelled to give a warning before showing this trailer: Proceed only if you're feeling emotionally strong. Fireflies in the Garden boasts an impressive cast (Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Ryan Reynolds, Hayden Panettiere) and it looks to be well-made — though I'm not sure I saw it very clearly through my tears. This film looks gut-wrenching.

The plot description is basic ("The semi-autobiographical story centers on the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced by an unexpected tragedy"), but you get a pretty clear sense of what the movie's all about from the international trailer, which you can see after the jump. The stars were scattered all over the map this weekend, between the Grammys and the BAFTAs, but yet another set of celebs headed to Germany for the 58th Berlinale International Film Festival. Ryan Reynolds showed his pretty face and his co-star Hayden Panettiere glittered in gold to represent their movie Fireflies in the Garden. As always, Penelope is beautiful in black, there for her film Elegy while Diane Kruger looked stunning and thrilled to be on the red carpet on her home turf. The festival will be going on all week, and we can't wait to see who else comes out to shine and show off their new movies.

Julia was showing her baby bump when filming Fireflies in the Garden in Texas this week. Obviously her character is also pregnant in the film. We've told you about how Orlando, Leo and Madonna are making contributions to the environment - and Julia has always been one to support the environment including building a $20 mil eco-friendly home. In Elle's Green issue, she talks about how each person can make a difference. Here are highlights:

• On the toxic threat school buses pose to kids: “I just feel that any parent who’s informed cannot put their kid on a school bus without saying to their school district or their congressman, ‘Hey, man, you gotta clean this up for us!’ Because it’s too easy not to fix.”
• On her appearance on Oprah to campaign for biodiesel buses: “I’ve been in this business for 20 years, so I understand for better or for worse the media frenzy and the power of celebrity. And until you say something of true value on Oprah, you don’t really realize how many people watch her.”
  On saving the planet: “It sounds corny, but it’s true: It’s our absolute responsibility to take care of our children so that we don’t just throw up our hands and say, ‘Wow, we pretty much f—ked this up. Good luck to ya in 50 years.’ Because we did create the problem little by little and that’s the way we’re gonna have to fix it, little by little, the best we can.”
• On everyday ways to stay green: “Every time I go to the grocery store carrying my grocery sacks back from the time before, I feel happy. All the tiny things, I think, really do make a difference.”

Celebrities definitely have access to greater resources than most of us, but we love that Julia reminds us that every little bit helps.

Julia Roberts is on the set in Texas where she is filming Fireflies in the Garden with Ryan Reynolds and Carrie-Ann Moss. The film is about a family that is torn apart after an unexpected tragedy. Word is, Hayden Panettiere has signed on as well. Don't know how she's going to juggle that with her Heroes cheerleading duties. Hopefully Julia will have some good advice for her younger up and coming costar.

"Heroes" darling Hayden Panettiere has joined the cast of Julia Roberts' latest project, Fireflies in the Garden, which began filming in Austin last week. The film is loosely based on director Dennis Lee's life, and, according to the story description, "explores the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced with an unexpected tragedy."

Though the impressive cast also includes Ryan Reynolds, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe, none of them can say that they've played an indestructible cheerleader before, so Hayden's got that going for her. I'll be interesting to see how the actress handles a dramatic film role.

Julia may be pregnant, but being a parent of twins already, she certainly doesn't have a ton of time to rest. At least her awesome husband Danny is around to help out. Her hands certainly look full, but she has managed to find time to make one more movie before the baby comes. Julia just signed on to star in Fireflies in the Garden with Carrie-Ann Moss and possibly Ryan Reynolds. It's about a family that's torn apart after an unexpected tragedy. Doesn't exactly sound like a romantic comedy, but Julia has always been amazing in more serious roles, too. We're just happy she's not taking a break from movies even though at this point we would totally understand if she did!
