The father of the GIF file format, Steve Wilhite, won the lifetime achievement award for creating the Internet age's most meme-able images at Tuesday night's Webby Awards in New York City. In lieu of The Webby Awards' traditional "5-Word Speech," Steve delivered a five-word GIF instead, set to the epic theme song of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It read: "IT'S PRONOUNCED 'JIF' NOT 'GIF.'"




Which brings us to one of the most highly debated pronunciations of the 21st century: Steve says 'JIF,' but what do you say? How do the cyber citizens of the world articulate the acronym for Graphics Interchange Format? It's natural to assume that the GI in GIF is pronounced with a J sound, like the words giant and ginger. But then again, why not a hard G, like the G in Graphics, for which it stands?

GifMill takes photo composites and video, then gives you, web warrior, the tools to crop or delete up to 100(!) frames. Users can rearrange the frames, speed up the animation, change its orientation, and even reverse it with the rewind tool.



We're digging the app because it's so straightforward — which is great when you're GIF-making under pressure. Shaking the phone will clear whatever you've worked on and let you start anew. After the animated masterpiece is completed, save it or send it off via email, text, Tumblr, or Twitter.

There's also an in-app $1 upgrade to add Emoji or text captions. The upgrade provides additional tools to adjust the size, color, and placement of the text.

  • Google Image Search — The Googs added support for animated GIF search today. In Google Image search, click on "Search Tools" just below the search bar, and, under the "Any Type" drop-down menu, select "Animated." Clicking on any of the results will open a preview of the animated GIF without having to load a new page.
  • Giphy — This website is a dedicated search engine for GIFs. Type whatever you want into the large search bar at the top. As you type, Giphy will show you related searches and suggestions. Roll your mouse over the thumbnails to see the animation. Click through to share the GIF via Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook, or grab an embed code.
