The Musical World Gets Together to Help Haiti

One day after music's biggest stars gathered in LA for the Grammys, many of them reconvened at the Jim Henson studios yesterday to record a new version of "We Are the World." The premiere of the single, which benefits Haiti, will take place during the Feb. 12 broadcast of the Vancouver Olympics opening ceremony on NBC. Kanye West was fresh from the French couture shows to join Jennifer Hudson and Wyclef Jean, while Joel Madden brought along little Harlow, who apparently flirted with the Jonas Brothers and Kanye. Benji Madden chatted with Rashida Jones, while Justin Bieber and Harry Connick Jr. mingled with Vince Vaughn.

Nicole Richie was there with Joel and Harlow, later joking, "I hope Jennifer Hudson wasn't upset that I was out singing her tonight." Lil Wayne had a little solo studio time, while Miley Cyrus and Pink bonded for a bit. Celine Dion, meanwhile, looked happy to share a moment with all three Jonas Brothers. Rashida's father, legendary producer Quincy Jones, was the man behind the original version of the song produced 25 years ago, and he was there again leading Hollywood's latest effort to help Haiti while also honoring Michael Jackson.

Kicking Off the Grammys With a Salute to Icons!

Last night Clive Davis hosted his annual pre-Grammy Salute to Icons with a star-studded crowd in attendance. Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Jay-Z were in the audience while Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas, and Jamie Foxx kept the crowd entertained with some of their Grammy-nominated hits. It's hard to forget how the night before the Grammys ended for Rihanna one year ago, but she smiled big throughout the party with so many of her friends. New in Town: Lovin' in the Cold

New in Town is packed with a lot of bad, wrong-headed moves including small-town stereotypes, predictability, conventionality, and in one bizarre scene, hard nipples. Despite a talented and likable cast with wonderful character actors like J.K. Simmons and Frances Conroy, this romantic comedy was probably doomed from the start due to a script that can't decide if it wants to be Fargo, Norma Ray, or Working Girl.

That said, there is something in this movie that no script can write in and that's some honest-to-goodness chemistry between the two leads. Maybe I'm a sucker for Harry Connick Jr., maybe it's rare to witness some genuine onscreen sparks, or maybe I've been suffering too long from generic rom-com fatigue. Whatever the reason, I couldn't help but get a moderate case of the warm fuzzies after watching it.

Movie Preview: Renée Zellweger Is New in Town

The trailer for the romantic comedy New in Town, starring Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr., seems to tell the whole story, and it looks like a predictable story at that.

The trailer for the romantic comedy New in Town, starring Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr., seems to tell the whole story, and it looks like a predictable story at that. As the plot description states, "Renée Zellweger stars as a Miami-based consultant whose latest assignment, to restructure a manufacturing plant in small-town Minnesota, causes her to reconsider her professional and personal objectives once she settles into her new life."

And yet, if it's so predictable, why did I laugh out loud a few times while watching the trailer? There's something kind of adorable and funny about this movie, and I'm actually excited to see it. New in Town (which was previously titled Chilled in Miami) opens Jan. 30. To check out the trailer, read more

TV Tonight: Living Proof on Lifetime

Raising awareness and funds when it comes to fighting breast cancer is only half the battle.

Raising awareness and funds when it comes to fighting breast cancer is only half the battle. Tonight's TV movie on Lifetime, Living Proof, shows that for the doctors and scientists working on a cure, the fight has just begun.

Starring Harry Connick Jr., Living Proof "is the true story of oncologist and researcher Dr. Dennis Slamon, the UCLA doctor who helped develop the breast cancer drug Herceptin, and his effort to keep the drug trials afloat."

Based on the clips I've watched, Dr. Slamon faced down messy politics and sacrificed a great deal to help women suffering from breast cancer, so it seems like an inspiring true story to air during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The movie also stars Bernadette Peters, Amanda Bynes, Angie Harmon, Swoosie Kurtz, Tammy Blanchard and Regina King, and Renée Zellweger is one of the executive producers.

Below I've included some preview clips, including a chat with Connick Jr. about the film and a taste of an original song he wrote for this project. Living Proof airs tonight at 9:00 p.m. (but check your local listings). To see the clips, read more

Renee Opens Up About Her Breast Cancer Scare

Amanda Bynes and Harry Connick Jr. attended the premiere of their new Lifetime TV movie Living Proof last night in NYC.

Amanda Bynes and Harry Connick Jr. attended the premiere of their new Lifetime TV movie Living Proof last night in NYC. Renee Zellweger was the executive producer on this project about Dr. Dennis Slamon, played by Harry, who developed the breast cancer drug Herceptin. The actress has a personal connection with the subject, recently revealing she had a breast cancer scare in 1996, with what luckily turned out to be benign tumors. The Lifetime movie premieres on Oct. 18, and Renee's story is a good reminder for all of us to keep up those monthly exams.

MLP, Alec, Whoopi, and Daniel Help Everything Come Up Tony

Radio City Music Hall was bursting with stars of the stage last night at the 2008 Tony Awards.

Radio City Music Hall was bursting with stars of the stage last night at the 2008 Tony Awards. The glitz and glamour were everywhere as some of the biggest names in Broadway came together to celebrate each other. Mary-Louise Parker was a highlight as usual, though I'm not sure what to say about the Counting Crows' Adam Duritz on her arm. Instead, I'll just get more excited that Weeds is back tonight! Alec Baldwin always looks dapper all dressed up, while Daniel Radcliffe made a surprise appearance before he makes his (naked) Broadway debut. Whoopi Goldberg — wearing Christian Siriano! — hosted the evening, helping hand out the biggest awards to In the Heights for best musical and August: Osage County for best play. Check out the full list of winners here.

Renée Is Covered All Ova' in Manitoba

Okay, so that rhyme is a bit of a stretch, but Renée Zellweger does deserve some props for braving the freezing cold temperatures filming her new movie, Chilled in Miami, in Manitoba, Canada yesterday.

Okay, so that rhyme is a bit of a stretch, but Renée Zellweger does deserve some props for braving the freezing cold temperatures filming her new movie, Chilled in Miami, in Manitoba, Canada yesterday. While Renée gets a pretty cute costar in Harry Connick Jr. for this film, nothing quite compares to her Leatherheads duo of George Clooney and John Krasinski. Not too much longer to wait for that one, finally — April is just around the corner. Fingers crossed it doesn't disappoint, but I'm thinking just seeing the boys in their old timey football gear will make it worth its while.

Stars Get Frisky Premiering P.S. I Love You

The hot guys (ugh, other than the mustache) stole the show at last night's premiere of P.S.

The hot guys (ugh, other than the mustache) stole the show at last night's premiere of P.S. I Love You in LA. It seems like Gerard Butler and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were pretty into each other, too, judging from the red-carpet game of grab ass (love it). Gerard said, "Jeffrey Dean Morgan rubbing my ass, yeah that's about as good as it gets!" Other excitement included the fact that Mary Louise Parker was looking hot on JDM's arm — yay for them being back together. Hilary Swank looked glamorous showing of her new movie, while Gina Gershon was showing off an interesting two-toned hair look, are you loving or hating it? While the previews make me feel like I might cry through the whole movie, I gotta say that I can't resist the Gerard/Jeffrey Dean Morgan duo.

Movie Preview: Gerard Butler, Hilary Swank in P.S. I Love You

Back when this movie was a part of my tearjerker movies Fall Movie Preview post, there was no trailer available, but I was looking forward to seeing what the tone of this movie would be.

Back when this movie was a part of my tearjerker movies Fall Movie Preview post, there was no trailer available, but I was looking forward to seeing what the tone of this movie would be. Now, judging from the newly released trailer, it looks a little sappy, but also cute and endearing — if you're in that kind of mood. Plus, I recently learned that Swank injured herself during a scene in which Gerard Butler is stripping, and somehow that makes me like the movie more.

Opening December 21, the movie is based on a novel and stars Hilary Swank as Holly, a young widow who discovers that her husband wrote out messages for her just before he died. Some of the notes include unusual requests, and before long, Holly and her girlfriends (played by Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon, pictured) are going on a string of adventures that Holly's late husband planned for her.

I think the best parts of the trailer feature Lisa Kudrow's character's ill-fated attempts to pick up men (well, those moments and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's extremely adorable smile are my favorite parts), but you can see what you think of the trailer yourself if you read more
