One Billion Rise Up to Fight Violence Against Women

On Valentine's Day, women around the world rallied, danced, protested, flash mobbed, and spoke out in a global day of action to end violence against women.

On Valentine's Day, women around the world rallied, danced, protested, flash mobbed, and spoke out in a global day of action to end violence against women. The worldwide campaigns were instigated by One Billion Rising, an organization that hopes to stop abuse against women. The name refers to the one billion women who have survived abuse and the number of women the organization asks to support them. The worldwide event — called V-Day — celebrated its 15th anniversary yesterday and urges our gender to "walk out, dance, rise up, and demand an end to this violence."

Famous women like Rosario Dawson, Anne Hathaway, Thandie Newton, Marisa Tomei, Jane Fonda, and Glenn Close attended V-Day events in cities that included London, Hollywood, and New York, while women young and old took to the streets of India, China, Bangladesh, Mexico, Poland, and other countries to stand up for the cause. See the beautiful, joyous photos of this important international campaign now!

Anne Hathaway showed her support for the One Billion Rising campaign in LA yesterday with husband Adam Shulman by her side. Jane Fonda and Marisa Tomei were among the other famous faces to join the annual event, organized to help end violence against women. It was a special occasion for Anne and Adam — it was their first Valentine's Day as a married couple. They tied the knot last September.

Valentine's Day hasn't been Adam's only recent chance to show his love for Anne. He has been by his wife's side throughout her big award season, which will come to a close next Sunday night. Anne scored a best supporting actress nomination for her role in Les Misérables at Feb. 24's Oscars. It will be a big evening for her, as the film is also up for a total of eight Academy Awards.

Jane Fonda Says "It's Just Beginning to Get Better" For Female Actresses

Jane Fonda's back on the big screen in director Bruce Beresford's Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding.

Jane Fonda's back on the big screen in director Bruce Beresford's Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding. The picture, which is out in limited release this Friday, sees Jane playing Grace, the hippie matriarch of a family with three generations of strong women. Catherine Keener plays her straight-laced daughter, and Elizabeth Olsen is Grace's wide-eyed granddaughter. We caught up with Jane this week in NYC, and she wasn't shy about discussing any aspect of her storied past. Jane talked about her career and even her decade-long marriage to Ted Turner. As it turns out, Jane — who makes a conscious decision to project a glamorous image at age 74 — is also in the process of writing books about sexuality for middle- and high-schoolers. We learned a lot more about Jane during the conversation. Check out highlights below:

  • On how she expected 74 to feel: "Several years ago, I didn't even imagine I'd be alive at 74, much less starring in a movie. Everything is a surprise to me, including . . . that I am happier than I have ever been, and that certainly is not what I would have expected."
  • On being happy at this point in her life: "You know something — I will have to say that a chunk of it has to do with Ted Turner. Spending 10 years — you don’t come out of spending 10 years with Ted Turner the same way that you went in. What that meant for me is that I come from a long line of depressed people — and so does Ted — but Ted is this rambunctious, over-the-top, funny person. He can be very outrageous. But I learned how to laugh with him, and I learned that it's OK to just be out there, and then you fall flat on your face, and then you get up! I don't know. Everything became lighter. Part of it has to do with Ted, and I am grateful for that."
  • On her similarities with her character Grace, and those family troubles: "It fits very well in the sense that I am a grandmother and I have had daughter issues that are resolved. As I get older, more and more I realize — is there anymore important in life than love and forgiveness? And the reason I wanted to do the movie, besides to work with Bruce Beresford and Catherine Keener, is that I wanted make a movie about love and forgiveness, and a movie that made you feel good when you left. Not that I don't like my special effects and everything."
  • On the availability of roles for women: "I think it's just beginning to get better in what could be a substantial way. I mean, it's a business. It's a market, and the marketers know that older women is the fastest-growing demographic. The fact is that Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has done hugely well. Meryl Streep's movies do hugely well financially. And I think that matters. I think that more and more television is making it possible for older women to be full, multidimensional people. I am always optimistic, and I think it's going to be better, yes."

Interview: Amanda de Cadenet on Loving "Women's Women" Jane Fonda, Gwyneth Paltrow, and More

We explained why we love photographer and British TV personality Amanda de Cadenet and her new show The Conversation, and tonight is the second episode!

We explained why we love photographer and British TV personality Amanda de Cadenet and her new show The Conversation, and tonight is the second episode!

We chatted with the motorcycle-riding mom of three (who's married to a rocker, no less) about everything from sex positions to The Bachelor to the benefits of marriage, but what Amanda's really passionate about is the plight of today's women. On her new Lifetime show The Conversation, Amanda gets into some heavy topics with famous women like Jane Fonda, Kelly Preston, Zoe Saldana, Sarah Silverman, and Gwyneth Paltrow. And she couldn't help but gush about her ladies, who she says are "truly women's women," in addition to opening up about how our sex as a whole needs to start sticking together. Here's what she said:

TrèsSugar: What did you learn from doing these interviews?
Amanda de Cadenet: That women globally are addressing very similar issues in their lives, and that we're not actually that different. I've met so many good people, and that was really the overwhelming feeling: Wow, there are some good people on the planet.

TS: What part of a woman's life do you think we're most scared to talk about?
AC: I would say people have a lot of shame about their relationships. Most women who I know have stayed in a less-than ideal relationship for way too long, and they get embarrassed to say, "Yeah I'm still with this person because I just can't leave."

Or people are uncomfortable saying, "I hate the way my body looks." It's just not PC to be down on your body these days, but the truth is that most of us are. So I love that my ladies are very outspoken about their bodies and how they feel about them. There's been this kind of picture painted, a standard that's been set, by whom I don't really know, that to be a woman who's having a successful life you have to be OK with your body, be earning enough money, be in a relationship. If you're a woman of a certain age you're supposed to have children. You're supposed to be conforming to society's idea of what it means to be a successful woman. None of us are, by the way. And that's part of what The Conversation is about: Who created this notion of what it means to be a woman on the planet? Because none of us are living up to it. And the reality is what we're actually talking about on the show, which is that no one's doing it perfectly. We're all doing the best we can do. And Jane Fonda at 73 says, "I'm finally whole." Gives us all permission to be human, right?

Holiday help: Last year Jane told us her simple philosophy for staying healthy during the holidays. "I just try not to drink too much or eat too much and I try to stick with an exercise regimen," she said. "The thing about the holiday is that the food's so good and you tend to eat too much, so either you [should] eat less or you work out more."

For girls, teenage-hood is really hard." The icon admitted that she doesn't miss the pressure she felt while coming of age to be popular or thin. Plus, Jane says age has helped her become the subject of her own life, rather than the object of someone else's. Watch her get honest with Anderson Cooper below.
