Alber Elbaz Brings Out His Jokes for London Lanvin Opening

>> In honor of Lanvin's first London store, Alber Elbaz — who is apparently on a post-show, protein-only diet — flew in to give a guided tour of his Spring 2009 collection.  During the day, there was a "girls only" policy, but at night, the ladies — Alexandra Shulman, Yasmin Le Bon, Anouck Lepere — were joined by the menfolk — Jefferson Hack, Juergen Teller, Jonathan Newhouse.  Microphone in hand, Elbaz had the audience "in stitches," according to WWD, as he cracked jokes while presenting: “I dress women.

I don’t undress them — unfortunately. My mother would be happy if I did.”

As for his denim collaboration with Acne: “It’s so nice when Acne tells me, ‘No problem, we can do that.’ I live in Paris, where you ask a cab driver to take you somewhere and he says ‘No.’”  When he introduced Anna de Rijk, hot off the runway, as his bride, he joked on his decision to carry wedding dress in the store: “I have friends — Liz Taylor types — who are on their third and fourth weddings. They tell me they need a different dress for each one.”  And to wrap it up, a little comment on what women want: “Next to chocolate or a rose, I think the only thing that can make a woman happy is maybe a pink dress.”

Chanel Fall 2009 Marks a Moss Appearance, Return to the LBD

>> Kate Moss caused a paparazzi scrum of a calibur we haven't seen much of this season this morning at Chanel.  As she emerged from backstage wearing the label, a frenzy of photographers four-deep surrounded her, which she apparently found hilarity in, embarking on a fit of giggles and wiping tears from her eyes.  She waved to Jefferson Hack across the way, gave Beth Ditto an enthusiastic hug, and then settled down between Mario Testino and boyfriend Jamie Hince, right down the way from Claudia Schiffer.

The photographers ended up breaking off a section of the black-and-white runway in efforts to get a shot of Kate.

The set wasn't a monstrous tweed jacket or organ set this time — but rather, a simply branded split scenario; and as promised, the collection was dubbed "Belle Brummell," an ode to Beau Brummell, inventor of the modern suit, with plenty of black suiting, removable white cuffs and collars, and splashes of mint and baby pink thrown in.  Karl Lagerfeld pushed the limit with a few looks — slits up to here and down to there, plus a few printed leotard-and-legging ensembles — but for sales, he's really depending on that little black dress in hard times, just like Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, and Christian Lacroix.

Quote Of The Day: Jefferson Hack On Gareth Pugh Fall 2009

He showed his presentation as a video, I was skeptical but blown away, literally.
He showed his presentation as a video, I was skeptical but blown away, literally. Some people grumbled that there were no clothes to feel the texture of. I'll leave that to the fashion purists. This was really the first time I've seen a designer use video to really great effect. To show the movement and sculptural possibilities of his clothing.

Not Just Another Party for Another Magazine

>> Before jetting off to Milan, London fashion's finest gathered for a dinner last night at the Double Club, in honor of Another Magazine's newest issue featuring Tilda Swinton.  Kate Moss, freshly returned from a safari in South Africa, made her first and only London Fashion Week appearance, dropping in with Jamie Hince for Jefferson Hack's Congolese family-style dinner.  Lily Cole, who sat front row at Vivienne Westwood Red Label earlier this week and then walked in the Qasimi show before heading back to Cambridge, popped back into town for the party, where Peaches performed her Karoake favorites while Kate, Tilda Swinton, and Daphne Guiness all sang along.

Happy 35th, Kate Moss!

>> Last year, Kate Moss tried to ring in 34 by partying one hour for every year since her birth — she only made it 18, but she did it in starry Chanel, no less.  This year it's all about the big 3-5, which marks twenty years since her first modeling job for The Face; Kate's supposed to celebrate all weekend, with the big house party tonight involving a pig on a spit, but we're celebrating with a look back at old-school Kate — think the glorious '90s.*image: source, source

Kate Moss and Jefferson Hack Bring Their Significant Others Out for a Little Chess

>> They made a public appearance together on Friday and again yesterday, so I think it's safe to say that Jamie Hince and Kate Moss are back together — especially since Jamie had his arm around Kate.  The two looked like everything was peaches and cream, smiling as they left the launch of Tracey Emin's new Travelling Chess exhibition at RS&A Gallery in East London.

Lila Grace was nowhere to be seen, but she was all that was keeping it from being a Moss-Hack family affair: Jefferson Hack and his fiancee Anouck Lepere — fresh from walking Paris Fashion Week — were sitting on the steps outside the opening, chatting and sipping tea.

Fashion In 50 Seconds 10/03/08

Forbes journalist Lauren Sherman wrote an interesting piece on the buying power of hipsters as seen by the booming sales of Urban Outfitters and the attendance of certain Fashion Week happenings. It's bit jumbled to us, the fact that trendsetters are described as those wearing stovepipe jeans and flannels and then everyone from Jefferson Hack to a person who shops at Urban Outfitters a la the mall are included in this grouping. But the point is that the young, left-of-center fashion kids want to spend money on clothing because being different all the time means shopping often.

New York Mag is the closest we come to any kind of celebrity-centered journalism and this morning there's some instant gratification on the front page. Someone put together a slideshow of Anna Wintour's possible successors and it's a whopping six slides long. We're not suggesting that there are more out there, but six slides isn't going to add up to a ton of pageviews which is why, we assume, the darn thing was created in the first place. Anyway...speaking of Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld there's a New York versus Paris exhibit uptown

Uniqlo's Japan sales are up by a whopping 20 percent for the month of September. The Japanese retail climate is just as stifled as all of those Western brick and mortars but the company attributes the jump to an early drop in temperatures and their aggressive advertising strategies. We think a brand like Uniqlo is just the kind of place people shop when they've stopped consuming from other retailers, but yeah, maybe it's just the change in weather.

As far as Great Britain mass market retailers go, Vogue has taken a moment to lament their continued decline. Most significant is that of Miss Sixty who is facing a hefty and unmanageable debt to their Italian parent company.

Style.com Gets Faster, Better, Stronger for Fashion Week(s)

>> It's t-minus three weeks until the Spring 2009 fashion weeks get under way, and Style.com is getting ready to kick it into high gear.

>> It's t-minus three weeks until the Spring 2009 fashion weeks get under way, and Style.com is getting ready to kick it into high gear.

Come the beginning of September, Candy Pratts Price won't be the only one with an avatar on the site — Lily Donaldson, Margherita Missoni, Chanel Iman, Jefferson Hack, Leigh Lezark, and Tinsley Mortimer are all signed on to provide front row play-by-play during fashion month, earning themselves each their own — hopefully cartoon — avatar.  If that isn't enough for you, Coco Rocha will also be playing video reporter from the tents and backstage during New York Fashion Week.

And this one is for all of you who hate waiting until midnight for all the runway slideshows to be posted: Style.com editor in chief Dirk Standen promises the images will be published faster thanks to updated technology, and viewers will have the option to see the shows in a full-screen format.
