Jessica Lange Talks American Horror Story in Emmy Press Room

Jessica Lange won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or movie for the first season of American Horror Story, but when she stopped by the press room, the chatter was all about season two. Lange talked about how excited she was that show creator Ryan Murphy is changing things up in such a big way, and she gave a hint about just how crazy things are going to get.

On learning that American Horror Story would be totally different in season two: "I was actually excited by the idea, because I felt we had told that story in the first season. To return to it was less interesting to me than starting afresh with a whole new place, time, characters, story, circumstances. I'm actually enjoying it. It's like doing a different film."

On working with Ryan Murphy: "It's very exciting. I never know exactly where he's going with his characters or with his stories. It's always surprising, and 99 percent of the time, it's very rewarding. He's got an amazing imagination and that translates to the writing, which gives me a lot to do. It's a great collaboration."

On the weirdness level of season two: "It's a more complex story. Ryan likes to create these things around themes. Last year, it was infidelity; this year, it's about faith and madness. I think the themes are bigger this year, which allows all of us to go further. My character goes from A to Z in this one."

Get the "Bloody" New Details on American Horror Story: Asylum

American Horror Story fans — including myself — are chomping at the bit for new information on season two, ominously titled Asylum.

American Horror Story fans — including myself — are chomping at the bit for new information on season two, ominously titled Asylum. Though by now we've met most of the cast, little has been leaked about their characters or the new plot lines, but this week's Entertainment Weekly has some clues. Asylum will feature aliens, Nazis, and Bloody Face, a killer who's got such a horrifying tradition I don't even want to repeat it here. Check out all the gory details on American Horror Story: Asylum.

  • Jessica Lange on her character: "If I were playing a straitlaced nun, start to finish, I can't say that would interest me too much . . . What's great are the extremes. To go from where she was and where she's getting to, that's what's going to be interesting."
  • Cocreator Ryan Murphy on his viewers: "I don't think people tune in to the show because they want My Dinner With Andre. I think they want to be scared. I'm just writing what I would like to see. I'm scared of aliens and I'm scared of Nazis and I'm scared of nuns. So it's the perfect stew of horror and fear."
  • New cast member Adam Levine on the new season: "It is absolutely terrifying. Very gruesome . . . What's great about the fact that it's on FX is that you can go too far. You can do really unorthodox, crazy things that people are going to talk about."
  • Cocreator Brad Falchuk on how he sees Asylum: "To me, last year was a family drama. This is our version of a workplace drama."

Blake Adds a Dash of Color to the Emmys Red Carpet

There were many gorgeous fashions on display last night on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards.

There were many gorgeous fashions on display last night on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards. In the first installment of our look at what the ladies wore there was a lot of black or white, but not at all basic — Amy Poehler went dark, January Jones picked a light color with a daring cutout bodice, and Chloe Sevigny had a little bit of both worlds with her polka dot number. Right now January has a slight lead in Fab's best dressed poll — who do you think deserves the title? Drew Barrymore switched things up a little with her peach gown, but it was Blake Lively who stopped traffic in her plunging Versace. Fab and Bella have the rundown on the style and beauty news of the night, and make sure to check back for the other half of our report on the ladies red carpet!

Grey Gardens: Appropriately Bleak, Yet Illuminating

It takes serious moxie to make a feature film from an excellent documentary, especially one as cultishly beloved as Grey Gardens.

It takes serious moxie to make a feature film from an excellent documentary, especially one as cultishly beloved as Grey Gardens. But, hey, it worked for Milk, and dare I say, it works for the new HBO movie, premiering this Saturday night and starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.

Like the 1975 documentary by Albert and David Maysles, this Grey Gardens zooms in on "Big Edie" (Lange) and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale (Barrymore), aunt and first cousin to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The story follows the pair from their flossy socialite (if emotionally unstable) beginnings to the bizarre codepedence of little Edie's adults years, spent living with her mother in their decaying Hamptons mansion, surrounded by diseased cats, feral raccoons, and armoire-size mounds of filth.

The making of the documentary is a plot point in HBO's rendition, so die-hard fans will appreciate the movie's ability to illuminate the once dark and murky parts of the Beales' story. For what I thought, read more

Drew and Jessica Take Their Grey Into White in LA

Drew Barrymore traded in her retro net for something a little more whimsical for the Grey Gardens premiere in LA.

Drew Barrymore traded in her retro net for something a little more whimsical for the Grey Gardens premiere in LA. She was still close by the side of her costar Jessica Lange, and the two were joined by some other lovely ladies — Ali Larter and Jennie Garth. Drew has been bubbling over with excitement about the movie for months and doesn't have enough great things to say about the story and experience. Luckily, Drew and Jessica don't have to spend the weekend checking the box office standings since their movie is airing Saturday night on HBO.

Drew Isn't Afraid of Red Carpet Annihilation at Grey Gardens

Drew Barrymore perfectly looked the part at the premiere of Grey Gardens in NYC last night.

Drew Barrymore perfectly looked the part at the premiere of Grey Gardens in NYC last night. She was joined by costars Jessica Lange — who looked great after her recent fall — and Jeanne Tripplehorn. It was a rainy night in Manhattan but the HBO movie's stars smiled big on the red carpet. Drew Barrymore's maybe on-again boyfriend and definitely repeat costar Justin Long also came out to support the film. On the red carpet Drew talked about taking on the role and how she related to her character:

  • On her red carpet fashion: "People get annihilated if people don’t like what they’re wearing, but then they dress plain to not get annihilated and then that’s boring. So I don’t care what people say I want to have fun with fashion."
  • On playing Little Edie: "I only care about if she thinks that I did right by her. And I lived and breathed her for three months, I cut off myself from the rest of the world to literally understand really being isolated in life and not live in a world with technology and to not have friends and family in abundance around me and I just kept thinking, 'I just want to honor you, I just want to honor you, I just want to honor you.'"
  • On missing playing the part: "The whole thing was challenging and scary. I’ve never been so terrified in my life [as when I was] pulling off Little Edie. . . I think one of my favorite things about her is her — and maybe it’s a character flaw, but I find it wonderful — is that she’s not afraid to show her emotions. She’s not afraid to be childlike. She’s not afraid to dance around a room. She’s not afraid to be angry. She’s not afraid to be vulnerable and quiet and calm and sad and to have that level of range as a human being I just find that rather interesting."

On Our Radar: Designers Inspired by Grey Gardens

If you're going to watch HBO's Grey Gardens, look forward to seeing a bevy of beautiful (and kooky) costumes worn by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.

If you're going to watch HBO's Grey Gardens, look forward to seeing a bevy of beautiful (and kooky) costumes worn by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. For those of you who don't know, Grey Gardens follows the eccentric, isolated, and crazy lives of of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, aunt and first cousin to Jackie Onassis, played by Lange and Barrymore.

As for the costumes, they'll be dazzling since they mirror the Beales' unique sense of style. "You’re recreating iconic people. [The style] has been covered so many times and in so many different ways by designers,” said Grey Gardens costume designer, Catherine Marie Thomas, who also mentioned that many of the costumes were found at various vintage shops while others were virtual knock-offs from the original documentary. Such looks include a floral brown and yellow maillot worn by Drew Barrymore which is the same print as the original. “We were lucky that a fan of Grey Gardens had collected that bathing suit,” said Thomas. In fact, designers have been so inspired by this movie, they've created pieces replicating the Beales' one-of-a-kind style that spanned from the 1930s to the 1970s.
