Elementary: 3 Things You Can Look Forward to (and One Thing You Can't)

CBS's Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary has proved to be one of this season's hits, and as if validating that, the series also landed the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this year.

CBS's Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary has proved to be one of this season's hits, and as if validating that, the series also landed the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this year. The show's executive producer Rob Doherty came to TCA with stars Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu and talked about how excited they were about the opportunity, and more importantly, during their panel, they talked about a few things to look forward to during the rest of this season — along with one thing you probably (disappointingly) won't see.

  1. Moriarty is still coming. Holmes's most infamous nemesis will make his debut by the end of this season, though he has not been cast yet. Doherty said he to hoped to keep the casting as secret as possible, saying they were "approaching it very carefully and as quietly as we can . . . It's less fun for me if all of you know who it is, when they'll arrive, and what they'll be doing," he added.
  2. Actor John Hannah won't be playing Moriarty. Doherty announced that British actor Hannah had been cast as someone from Sherlock's past, but the executive producer wouldn't reveal exactly who. He did stress that Hannah wasn't playing Moriarty, however.
  3. Irene is coming, too. Doherty also addressed whether we'd see the character of Irene, another figure from Sherlock Holmes mythology. Doherty admitted to struggling with exactly how she'd be introduced, and said the writers had talked about possibly doing a flashback episode to introduce her. It didn't sound like there was a plan, but Doherty made it sound like it's on the horizon: "We definitely want to meet her. You will see a living, breathing actress reading lines and portraying Irene."
  4. But you won't be seeing Holmes and Watson hook up anytime soon. Miller and Liu were asked to address rumors that they'd been told they had too much romantic chemistry, and they both denied that, but Liu did say they were given notes that Holmes and Watson seemed too familiar, "like they've known each other for a while." While Miller and Liu talked about how much they get along — about Liu, Miller said, "It's a real blessing to form a working relationship and a bond with someone you love and respect so much" — don't expect their onscreen relationship to get romantic anytime soon, or ever. Doherty acknowledged that though people might expect them to hook up, "we love to defy expectations on this show," and quite concretely, he said, "For as long as I am a part of this show, it's not something I want to see." Why not? "I don't think we need it," he admitted.

Pilot Scoop: Elementary

Sherlock Holmes is a timeless character who gets frequent updates, and CBS is bringing its own version of the literary detective to life this Fall with Elementary.

Sherlock Holmes is a timeless character who gets frequent updates, and CBS is bringing its own version of the literary detective to life this Fall with Elementary. There are a few twists: the sleuth, played by Brit Jonny Lee Miller, is a recovering addict who lives in present-day Brooklyn, and his Watson is a lady, played by Lucy Liu. To find out whether this reimagining is going to be your cup of tea, just check out my assessment.

  • What it's about: Holmes is an addict who has just left rehab, and he's been assigned a sponsor who will live with him as he transitions from his rehab facility: Joan Watson, a former surgeon. Holmes spends his time as a consultant for the NYPD, using his considerable intelligence and intuition to help them solve crimes. Though the Holmes/Watson relationship is initially to serve his recovery, Watson finds that she likes tagging along at crime scenes and helping. Thus, the team is born.
  • Where it works: Miller is fantastic as a twitchy but brilliant Holmes, and while he makes the character his own, he shares the rakish charm of another famous Sherlock: Robert Downey Jr. It's so mesmerizing watching the detective put the puzzle pieces together that you may enjoy this show even if you're not a fan of traditional procedurals. Miller also has some nice romantic chemistry with Liu, which past Sherlock/Watson pairs can't really boast about.
  • Where it doesn't: The pop culture landscape might be a little too saturated with Sherlock Holmes stories right now, especially considering that the BBC's Sherlock is also set in modern day.
  • When it's on: Thursdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
  • You might like this show if: You like crime-fighting duos with sexual tension à la Bones and Castle.

Watch a preview for Elementary after the jump.

Sienna Miller joined her After Miss Julie costars Jonny Lee Miller and Marin Ireland onstage in NYC last night as they officially opened their Broadway show. The trio had a great deal of support for their big evening, with Anna Wintour, Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes and her new husband Hugh Dancy turning out to attend both the premiere and afterparty. True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard also made an appearance, though his rumored lady friend Kate Bosworth wasn't by his side. Sienna beamed in her shimmery short dress at the bash, but she might not be so smiley if she braves reading her reviews.

Sienna Slips Into Something Familiar For Her New Costar

Sienna Miller had a midday wardrobe change yesterday in NYC.

Sienna Miller had a midday wardrobe change yesterday in NYC. She arrived to rehearsal for After Miss Julie in a floral print dress, and then was spotted in an outfit she wore at Coachella last year for lunch with her costar Jonny Lee Miller. They're tackling her Broadway debut together, but Sienna has known Jonny for a while. Angelina Jolie's first husband is also a good pal of Jude Law's, which should make for interesting company when he arrives in Manhattan this Fall.

TV Tonight: Eli Stone

Eli Stone, which premiered last Spring in the aftermath of the writers' strike and begins its second season on ABC tonight, is a warm, cozy blanket of a TV show.

Eli Stone, which premiered last Spring in the aftermath of the writers' strike and begins its second season on ABC tonight, is a warm, cozy blanket of a TV show. It doesn't get a lot of buzz — a fact it's trying to change with guest stars; more on that in a second — but it never fails to leave me with a smile on my face.

If you missed it the first time through or need a refresher, Jonny Lee Miller plays the title character, an attorney who begins having strange visions — either as the result of a brain aneurysm or because he's a modern-day prophet. The aneurysm was removed through a risky surgery at the end of the first season; what happens to the visions now remains to be, er, seen. The only certain thing is that there will be more singing and dancing, featuring supporting cast members like the wonderful Victor Garber.

Like a few other under-the-radar shows (Chuck comes to mind), Eli Stone has reeled in several high-profile guest stars for this new season, including Sigourney Weaver on tonight's premiere and Katie Holmes, whose appearance we've already gotten to glimpse, on next week's episode. Will these guest stars win any new viewers over to Eli's charming ways? Time will tell. For now, you can check out a preview of the new season if you read more

Katie's Weekend of Fun, Family and Filming

Katie Holmes wrapped up her week of work on Eli Stone Friday as she filmed scenes in a LA park with her co-star Jonny Lee Miller.

Katie Holmes wrapped up her week of work on Eli Stone Friday as she filmed scenes in a LA park with her co-star Jonny Lee Miller. We heard from Jonny a few days ago when he spoke at the Summer TCAs about his very special guest star. Once her shooting wrapped, Katie was right back to spending quality time with her family over the weekend. She took Suri — who sported what's apparently the most popular dress for celebrity babies — on a shopping trip to The Grove. Katie spent Sunday by Tom's side as they watched a car race in their coordinated leather jackets. We can't wait to see Katie back on TV, but it's always a treat to see her looking so happy with the people she loves most.

Ashton Kutcher

Scrubs, Ashton, and Life on Mars All Go Big on ABC

Yesterday was another fun one at the TCAs in LA!

Yesterday was another fun one at the TCAs in LA! Buzz and I buckled down to enjoy the first day of ABC panels, which included some swoonworthy celebrity sightings including Ashton Kutcher and newly fit Zach Braff. Check out Buzz for full news on the shows, but here are my thoughts on the day, shows, and whether or not Jonny Lee Miller wants to talk about Angelina Jolie:

  • The day kicked off with Eli Stone and the question on everyone's mind was Katie, Katie, Katie. We got a few more details on her role, but mostly we'll have to wait for Oct. 21 to see her return to TV singing and dancing.
  • When asked about Angelina Jolie, her former husband, Eli Stone star Jonny Lee Miller, said we'd have to call her. Ha.
  • Breaking news: The Scrubs folks are funny! While Bill Lawrence revealed that this will be Zach Braff's last year on the show, the whole group seemed excited about the move to ABC.
  • Love love love Sarah Chalke (who they kept joking is the mother on How I Met Your Mother). Lots more from the hilarious panel here.
