Kick Ass

Despite its lack of superheroes and weapons, Dreamworks's How to Train Your Dragon managed to regain the top spot at the box office with $20 million. It's been a few weeks since it came in at number one, but it looks like the family fave was a bigger draw than my pick, Kick-Ass, which came in closely behind it at No. 2, earning $19.8 million.

Last week's winner, Date Night, came in third with $17.3 million, followed by new release Death at a Funeral, which pulled in $17 million. The top five was completed by blockbuster Clash of the Titans, which fell to $15.8 million.

UPDATE: Final tallies calculated Monday show that Kick-Ass actually beat Dragon for the No. 1 spot!

This week we've got two movies to highlight for y'all: superhero flick Kick-Ass and consumerism satire The Joneses. The Buzz team had plenty of good things to say, so watch 'em gush!

By now you may have heard that Kick-Ass isn't your average comic book-based movie. Instead of your friendly neighborhood heroes who only want to help the innocent, you have a cast of superpower-free renegades who shouldn't be anyone's hero — yet each and every player in Kick-Ass manages to win you over, one filthy word at a time.

Relative unknown Aaron Johnson stars as nerdy, awkward Dave Lizewski (AKA Kick-Ass), a guy who wonders why no regular person has ever tried to be a superhero. Determined to be the first, he puts on a cheap scuba suit and tries his hand at combating crime. Soon, he finds out that he's not the only masked avenger in town when the true badasses — Hit Girl and Big Daddy — come out to play. Played by Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz, the father-and-daughter pair are the real fighters who are after crime boss Frank D'Amico.

What follows is a violent, action-filled thrill ride that has you cheering, cringing, and ultimately, wanting more. To hear why, just read more

The geeky good time of Wondercon allowed me the opportunity to talk to stars of upcoming movies that I'm super excited about, including irreverent comic-turned-film Kick-Ass. The movie madness of Wondercon continues, this time with the controversial comic book adaptation Kick-Ass. I talked with the young stars of the film, Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz, who play Kick-Ass and Hit Girl, the kids that get it into their heads to don masks and try to be superheroes — without superpowers.
