Killing Them Softly

Professional hit man Jackie (Brad Pitt) gets called in to take out two amateur robbers who hit up the wrong card game in this dark thriller. Set in the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, the film isn't a straightforward mob movie. Yet despite an all-star cast that includes James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, and Ray Liotta, the characters and story at times get overshadowed by the gratuitous violence. DVD extras include a making-of featurette and deleted scenes.

Brad Pitt stepped out for a screening of his film Killing Them Softly at the Mayfair Hotel in London today. He's been logging lots of time in the UK, filming The Counselor with Michael Fassbender and spending time with his six kids. Brad's wife-to-be, Angelina Jolie, has also been stationed in England shooting her latest, Maleficent. Although they have been busy with their separate projects, Brad and Angelina have had time to visit their home in the French countryside, Chateau Miraval. The Jolie-Pitt gang was reunited at the end of August, when Brad, Angelina, and the kids turned up at a toy store in the French town of Le Touquet.

Killing Them Softly Trailer: Brad Pitt's Got a Goatee and a Gun

Brad Pitt is Jackie Cogan, a ruthless (yet amiable) assassin with a penchant for killing his victims from a distance, in the dramatic thriller Killing Them Softly. Cogan is tasked with taking down two young thieves (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) who knocked over a poker game. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if said poker game wasn't being put on by gangsters, and if the amateurs didn't keep bragging about their $100,000 loot. Richard Jenkins also stars, along with mob men extraordinaires James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta.

Killing Them Softly premiered at Cannes this year and garnered mostly positive reviews. Seeing Pitt and Gandolfini together again sparks memories of the two in 2001's fellow hit-man movie The Mexican, though this movie definitely looks darker and grittier. Killing Them Softly is set for release on Oct. 19, but you can watch the trailer when you read more.
