Knight and Day

Tom Cruise and Jimmy Kimmel were harnessed to a zipwire on Friday to perform a stunt above LA's Hollywood Boulevard. The boys later went back into Jimmy's studio to record an interview — check it out below — as Tom continued promoting Knight and Day. It was a tough weekend for Tom's film at the box office, which came in third after Toy Story 3 and Grown Ups. It wasn't a total failure for Tom, though, because the movie managed to gross $28 million thanks to its early opening on Wednesday. Tom wasn't sweating the results yesterday when he brought his mom and kids Connor and Isabella to see his buddy Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees take on the Dodgers. Katie Holmes, meanwhile, traveled to Toronto with Suri. The girls spent yesterday afternoon picking strawberries together, but soon Katie will report to the set of her new movie about the Kennedys.

To infinity and beyond! Woody, Buzz, and the cute characters of Toy Story 3 won a second weekend at the box office with $59 million. That was enough to beat out both of the new big releases; Adam Sandler's Grown Ups came in second with $41 million, while Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz's Knight and Day took third with $20.5 million.

The Karate Kid and The A-Team rounded out the rest of the top five with $15.4 million and $6 million, respectively. Something tells me we'll see all of these standings change up very soon — Eclipse opens in theaters on Wednesday.

Tom Cruise has been all over this week promoting Knight and Day, which finally arrived in theaters on Wednesday. Buzz found his blockbuster to fun and summery, but so far the movie has failed to meet expectations and only grossed $3.8 million on its opening day. Regardless, the film still might be the beginning of Tom's road back to major movie stardom. I recently talked about the tricky territory that is the action romantic comedy, and the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz vehicle Knight and Day was poised to be another stone in the pile of failed attempts. However, the dynamic duo pulled through, and with the help of a clever script and lightning quick, entertaining action, they've delivered a perfectly fun Summer blockbuster.

The lightweight story has enough intrigue to keep you interested, and Cruise plays Roy Miller, the kind of character he should be looking for more of in movies — a vaguely mysterious hero who throws punches more than he monologues. As June, Diaz is a perky delight, as usual (though her spotty Boston accent almost derails her).

Cameron Diaz played up her long legs in a gray Elizabeth and James minidress and blazer in NYC last night as she arrived at The Daily Show studios. She's been all over the city promoting Knight and Day with her costar Tom Cruise, though the pair parted ways for a few hours yesterday so he could catch up with Suri and Katie while Cameron dashed around town running errands. Cameron showed off her bronzed swimsuit body on the July cover of InStyle, and now she's proudly showing off the tanned stems she earned while sporting a tiny bikini recently vacationing in Hawaii.
