Joanna Coles Named Editor in Chief of Cosmopolitan (Updated)

Stefano Pilati isn't the only big name in fashion with a new job.

Stefano Pilati isn't the only big name in fashion with a new job. Joanna Coles, editor of Marie Claire, will take over for Cosmopolitan editor Kate White on Sept. 10 — right in the middle of New York Fashion Week.

"Cosmopolitan is an iconic brand that resonates with women worldwide," Coles said in a statement. "To be able to take over the flagship edition is both a huge challenge and an incredible opportunity. I relish the chance to put my stamp on Cosmo and make it the young woman's ultimate playbook for confidence, choices and navigating change."

Coles, who has filed stories everywhere from the BBC to New York Magazine, introduced Marie Claire to the world of reality television. In 2008 she produced Running in Heels, a competition show set in the magazine's offices. She also got the brand's name on Project Runway when she hired Nina Garcia as Marie Claire's fashion director the same year.

White had been editor of Cosmopolitan for 14 years. She left to pursue her own writing and speaking engagements.

Update: Coles's office at Marie Claire will now be occupied by Anne Fulenwider, who served as the magazine's executive editor for two years until she became editor in chief of Brides in late 2011. "I have such a strong attachment to the brand and what it delivers to the savvy, stylish women who read it," Fulenwider said about her homecoming. "I look forward to contributing to its continued success on every front — from print to digital to television."

Kristen Stewart joins her On the Road costars Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley for a photo spread inside Marie Claire's September issue, on newsstands Aug. 17. Miley Cyrus posed for the cover, while Kristen and the boys teamed up for a few key promotional shots. The images were taken in May during the Cannes Film Festival, where Kristen was promoting her Jack Kerouac adaption and boyfriend Robert Pattinson was celebrating the Cosmopolis world premiere, which she also attended. Since then, things have taken a dramatic turn for the couple. Last month photos of Kristen cheating with Rupert Sanders shocked fans, and she's remained in hiding ever since. As for Robert, he temporarily moved out of their shared residence and relocated to Reese Witherspoon's Ojai estate; however, next week he'll make his first public appearance since news of the scandal when he visits The Daily Show With Jon Stewart on Monday.

Miley Cyrus Talks Liam and Wedding Plans in Marie Claire

Miley Cyrus looks ladylike on the cover of Marie Claire.

Miley Cyrus looks ladylike on the cover of Marie Claire. She posed for the September issue of the publication in Malibu just hours after news of her engagement to Liam Hemsworth was announced in June. Miley's since been busy visiting her fiancé on set in New Orleans and most recently Philadelphia. She was back in LA this weekend, though, and showed off her new blonder hairstyle on Twitter. Inside the magazine, Miley chats about Liam and spills the details on her engagement ring. Here's more from Miley Cyrus in Marie Claire:

  • On her engagement ring: "I had no input. We'd been kind of talking about [getting engaged], and I saw something like it online at one point and thought it was really pretty, but I usually wear rose gold. I just love that it's old and has a story. And I'm happy because it doesn't look like anything else I wear."
  • On getting engaged at a young age: "Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with. I don't really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we've made to each other. And we want to have a long engagement."
  • On her fiancé Liam: "Liam and I have a really good relationship . . . neither of us is superjealous. We know each other and would never do anything to hurt each other."

Blake Lively Talks Dating and Sex in Marie Claire

Blake Lively's on the cover of July 2012's Marie Claire, and inside the issue, she chats about her new movie, Savages.

Blake Lively's on the cover of July 2012's Marie Claire, and inside the issue, she chats about her new movie, Savages. The magazine hits newsstands next Tuesday on June 19. The role in Oliver Stone's thriller is a racy one for Blake, who's best known for her work as Serena van der Woodsen on the small screen in Gossip Girl. The CW series ends next year, and Blake has her sights on more movie work. Blake was quick to draw distinctions between her real self and Serena, especially in the dating department, though she didn't touch on boyfriend Ryan Reynolds. Blake also spoke about her love of fashion, and what was hardest about prepping to work with Oliver Stone. Here are highlights from Blake Lively in Marie Claire:

  • On not being like Serena: "People like to draw parallels between my life and the scandalous stories on Gossip Girl. I dress the same as my character, so they think, 'She lives this life on and off set.' I recently shared how many boyfriends I've had [four], and people were like, 'That's impossible!' But it's true. I've been with very few people. If I'm not with somebody who really excites or inspires me, then I'd rather be by myself."
  • On the hardest part of training for Savages: "I went to the gun range and learned how to shoot a gun for the first time. It was awful. I asked myself, 'Why were these things ever invented?' But I did feel good that my first three shots were straight to the heart. It's good to know — don't mess with me in a gun battle."
  • On not having a stylist: "My assistant will call fashion houses for me, but I always pick the outfit, shoes, jewelry, and a lot of times I do my own hair and makeup for events. Sometimes I think, 'God, why do I do this to myself? It's so much extra work!'"

Jessica Alba shows some skin in a Versus dress on the cover of Marie Claire's June issue, which hits newsstands Tuesday, May 22. The mother of two turned 31 last month and seems to enjoy the juggling act that comes with motherhood and stardom. She recently stepped out in a Michael Kors number at the Met Gala in NYC and mingled with other famous faces at the star-studded White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC. Jessica will also appear in a new film, A.C.O.D., set to be released sometime in 2012. In the magazine, Jessica opens up about her early career image, how she has changed since becoming a mom, and her former sexy self. Here's more from Jessica Alba in Marie Claire:

  • On her early career image: "I had a show, Fox’s Dark Angel, that premiered when I was 19. And right away, everyone formed a strong opinion about me because of the way I was marketed. I was supposed to be sexy, this tough action girl. That’s what people expected…I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable. I wanted to be chic and elegant!"
  • On how she has changed since motherhood: "Now that I’m older, I’ve learned how to own it, but I’m still not very overt. There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself. It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I’m going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge."
  • On her former sexy self: "I like to get positive attention. But if I have a choice between someone noticing in a negative way what I’m wearing and going, What was she thinking? or someone not noticing what I’m wearing, I would rather not make a statement at all and just have a good conversation instead."

Leighton Meester Reflects on Her "Crazy" but "Happy" Childhood in Marie Claire

Leighton Meester covers Marie Claire's new April issue.

Leighton Meester covers Marie Claire's new April issue. The Gossip Girl star also has That's My Boy with Adam Sandler arriving in theaters this June. Leighton appears in the magazine to chat up the Sandler comedy, but also got personal in her chat. She spoke about her tumultuous childhood, and how she worried about her family having enough money for necessities. Leighton also touched on getting married someday, saying she's not sure it's something she'll definitely do. Here are highlights from Leighton in Marie Claire:

  • On her childhood: "My family has a crazy history. Probably the craziest I’ve heard of. . . I look back now and I see it in a nice light. It wasn’t uncomplicated. But I played outside. I went to the beach. There were happy, fun times."
  • On tough times as a kid: "I couldn’t relate to kid stuff. 'Jimmy doesn’t like me!' Who cares? I was worried we didn’t have gas money or food. Those were my concerns."
  • On dating: "I never had a boyfriend until I was 18. It’s nice, I guess – when you like them. But it isn’t the most important thing. I’m not sure I ever want to get married. The only time a relationship is good is when you really love them. I don’t want to hang out with some guy I just like."

Eva Mendes looks glamorous in a jeweled top on the cover of Marie Claire's March issue. The actress has been busy with multiple projects, including Girl in Progress, which hits theaters in April, and Holly Motors, though much of her headline making is due to boyfriend Ryan Gosling. The duo worked together on The Place Beyond the Pines last year and have been spotted sharing romantic dates in Paris, Disneyland, and around LA since. Eva touched on working with Ryan, her own insecurities, and how she gets her glowing skin. Here's more from Eva Mendes in Marie Claire:

  • On working with Ryan Gosling: "He’s your dream costar. I have never felt so creatively satisfied on a film."
  • On her diet and workout routine: "I run four to five times a week, mixing it up among distance running, intervals on a track, and running uphill on a treadmill. I don't eat meat and stopped eating chicken — my skin has gotten a lot better."
  • On her body image: "What I tell girls is what they don’t like about themselves now, they will probably end up loving as an adult, because that’s what happened to me. When I am complimented on things that I didn’t like when I was 13, like my overbite and my mole, that’s when you realize that your imperfections are why people love you."

Additionally, Angelina spoke about how she's really a homebody and doesn't have too many female friends. Angelina Jolie told Marie Claire:

  • On her bond with Brad: "[Brad] has expanded my life in ways I never imagined. We built a family. He is not just the love of my life, he is my family. I hold that very dear. I suppose what I’ve learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own. I’m very, very grateful to have such a loving family, and I wouldn’t have that without him."
