Dexter: 4 Things We Learned About Season 7

Showtime's serial-killer drama Dexter is back for its seventh season Sept.

Showtime's serial-killer drama Dexter is back for its seventh season Sept. 30, and the cast and showrunners came to the TCA this week to talk about its return. Stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, who play adoptive siblings Dexter and Deb, and their latest guest star, Chuck's Yvonne Strahovski, talked about the changes we'll see now that Deb knows the truth about Dexter. We also learned about Strahovski's character, so read on to find out about that and what else we can look forward to in season seven — which will probably be the next to last.

  1. The outcome of Deb finding out about Dexter's secret will be huge. In the season six finale, Deb walks in on Dexter in an awkward moment: right in the middle of his latest kill. Now that she knows his secret, Hall says it's a game-changer: "One of the things we've always been able to count on [is that] Dexter's secret is his own, and it's not anymore." Obviously Deb will struggle with what to do now that she knows her brother is a murderer, because even though she knows what Dexter has done is wrong and she's a police officer, Deb "was already trapped in this web of acceptance for him."
  2. Yvonne Strahovski's character has some secrets. Strahovski plays Hannah McKay, a woman who meets Dexter when she's helping the Miami Police. And as expected, she'll be quite mysterious: Strahovski said Hannah "has a dark past that is slowly revealed."
  3. It's gonna be a good one. Hall compared this season to the two seasons of Dexter that he considers the best: season one and season four (which featured John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer). "This season feels as genuinely informed by everything that's come before." He remarked on a feeling of "arrival," while Carpenter also jumped in to say "Can I add 'dangerous'? It's very dangerous this year."
  4. Deb may be in danger. Given that Dexter has certain urges and a dilemma on his hands with his sister knowing what he's done, Deb could be Dexter's latest victim. Exec producer Scott Buck made it sound like it's not out of the question. "Dexter's a serial killer. The thought has to at least have crossed his mind that it would be an easy solution to this whole problem."

Rachel Bilson, AnnaLynne McCord, and More Celebrate TV With Cocktails

Rachel Bilson, AnnaLynne McCord, and Lucy Liu were among the actresses who stepped out for last night's CW, CBS, and Showtime 2012 Summer TCA Party at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. The ladies were out to support their TV shows Hart of Dixie, 90210, and CBS's new Sherlock-based Elementary, respectively. They were ready for cocktails and mingling after their network hosted panels touting the new seasons of their programs during the day. Lucy joined her leading man, Jonny Lee Miller, to explain how their version of Sherlock Holmes is different from Robert Downey Jr.'s big-screen franchise and the BBC's Sherlock. For starters, Lucy, a woman, plays Watson, Sherlock's sidekick.

Rachel, AnnaLynne, and Lucy made the rounds saying hi to Showtime stars Michael C. Hall, of Dexter, Episodes' Matt LeBlanc, and Don Cheadle from House of Lies. AnnaLynne's 90210 costars Jessica Lowndes and Matt Lanter were on hand, too. Rounding things out for the three networks were a handful of CBS leading ladies like Two Broke Girls's Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings. Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter grabbed a seat to watch the sunset on the beach in Venice, CA yesterday.

Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter grabbed a seat to watch the sunset on the beach in Venice, CA yesterday. The duo looked cozy despite their divorce being finalized in December. This isn't the first time Michael and Jennifer have been spotted together following their separation since they were seen on a coffee date last month. They also sat together at the SAG Awards, where their TV show, Dexter, was up for best drama and Michael was nominated for best actor. Neither Michael nor the Showtime series went home with any statues, but it looked like the couple had a fun night. Both Jennifer and Michael will be back on the small screen soon now that Dexter has been renewed for a seventh and eighth season.

Michael C. Hall and his ex-wife Jennifer Carpenter were spotted in LA getting coffees together on Wednesday. They apparently followed up the caffeine date with dinner at the Peninsula Hotel. The couple split up back in 2010 after nearly two years of marriage, and their divorce was finalized last month. Michael and Jennifer continued, however, to work on their Showtime series Dexter together and seem to still be on friendly terms. It's not clear, though, whether there is a romantic reunion for Michael C. Hall and Jennifer on the horizon. They'll continue to costar on the small screen for a few more years since Dexter has been renewed for an additional two seasons.

AmfAR hosted its latest star-studded gala last night at NYC's Cipriani Wall Street to honor the philanthropic work of former President Bill Clinton, who had his daughter Chelsea and her husband of six months Marc Mezvinsky on hand to celebrate. Chelsea took the stage to introduce her father and compliment his good work to fight AIDS worldwide. She said, "The work he has done, the work he is doing and the work he will continue to do [for AIDS research] is invaluable. . . That's a good reason to be proud. An even better reason to be proud is he hasn't stopped." The Good Wife's Julianna Margulies enjoyed the evening out with her great looking husband Keith Lieberthal, while Dexter's Michael C. Hall made the rounds with a guy pal. A handful of fashionable folks also used the event as an informal kick-off for Fashion Week, with Vogue's Anna Wintour mingling with an Alexander McQueen-clad Blake Lively.
